I have a wild Honda ATC 3-wheeler (anyone remember those?) that has a baja kit on it that actually ran the 1000. It has a Mikuni carb, a K&N filter, and a foam sock that goes over the K&N filter. Without the foam, the engine wouldn't have made it 1,000 miles.

Thats a good story.

Many many many years ago (when men were men and sheep were nervous), I ran the Baja 1000 a few times on a Swedish motorcycle using a similar setup: a K&N inside a Twin-Air foam filter. Changed the foam element several times, didn't touch the K&N and finished with no troubles. The engine needed a new piston and rings after the race, though.

Good products for those express purposes.

Yes, I can dig it!

Makes me wanna fire up the 250R/ modified 360R. That thing shakes the ground when it's idling, and you can't even steer until you're in 3rd gear. The cylinder (2 cycle) was ported until the walls are paper thin. I bet the foam has disintegrated by now. I should drag it out of the garage and restore it, and start it up. You guys might like a video of it. I used to pull wheelies literally miles long and even steer with the front wheel off the ground by shifting my weight. It smokes the tires like on Dukes of Hazzard.

Back when men were men, I jumped a canal with it on my last ride on it. I almost made it. Hit the far side embankment and shot (some say) about 8 feet straight up. Somewhere there is a video of me jumping it over some guy on a 200x.

Geez...now I almost got the bug again!

I used to have a 200X, that was treated to some head, cam, carb and exhaust work, as well as some suspension. It put many a mile in across various parts of the AZ desert and dry riverbeds. Then, the world went soft and the 4 wheelers came on the scene.

Nope, the last time I was there was in '78 in my '77 Chevy Stepside 4WD running straight headers and not much air pressure in my tires on a Friday night, with an ice chest full of beer strapped in the passenger seat. Damn that was fun drag racing up the hill, over and over. My buddy was running around on his Husqky that night. I don't think he had as much fun.

How is it possible that a wet media filter K&N could not possibly take out more dirt than a dry media filter? The oil would most certainly attract more dirt? Yes. W/the K&N has the oil and the filter. The standard is just the filter?????????

That may have been me....Mine was an '83 200X and my scoutmaster owned Honda of Pomona. Built to the point of being almost too insane to ride.....then I rode a friend's 350X and mine was never the same...

I had a beautiful 200X, drove to CA from Seattle, sight unseen and when I got there it was like it had never been riden.....mint condition and I only gave the gal $400 for it!! (bought from co-worker who had it in storage)

rode that for about 3 years - what a great machine!!

yea, rode the Suzuki 500 (Quadzilla) and well knew what the "other side" looked like - still loved my X - I will post a pic

4) you have Popeye forearms, fingers and wrists and would rather service a K&N element weekly than change the stock element annually.

They have their applications for sure.

If you look at Fresno from Google Earth, you see that I am surrounded by thousands of miles of dirt. In the Summer, that dirt blows over everything, and gets into car air filters. Very very fine silt and dust everywhere. I prefer paper filters because where I live looks like the inside of a vacuum bag.
