K/N Air Filter
 

I am about to replace the air filter in my car, I have K/N in all my other vehicles, any thoughts on the same in my 3.2?

I wouldn't do it. The K&N's micron filtering is too large and lets a lot of crud get by and get in the engine. It will run good, but you don't want the internals of the engine subjected to contaminated particles that will get through. Just my opinion.

No K&N's for me. I'm more used to them on dirt bikes and finally learned the hard way. K&N claims they pass more air so you can make more power. The only way (I think) to pass more air is to filter it less. I won't use them on any of my dirt or street bikes and would not use it in the 911 either. I do think it's just personal preference and unless you're taking your 911 to really dusty places it's not likely to make that much of a difference.

Stick with paper, especially in the summer. If you want to run K&N, that might be ok if you are on the track or drive where there is not a lot of dust.

I'd stick with stock. K&N's are fine, they just need a fair amount of attention applied on a disciplined schedule. I've had one for many years now, and have had the opportunity to inspect what is going on upstream in the intake as well as the motor. I've not had any issues with dirt. I also clean and oil twice a year-about every 2000 miles. In fact, too much oil, which will also grab more dust, is probably the biggest consequence. With a MAF, it can wreak havoc on the ssignal wire.

Life would be simpler with a paper filter for most, IMO.

stock is good - K&N "might be OK" not worth the gamble

K&N and/or CAI...snake oil, PURELY.

K&N...not just snake oil but snake oil with a little anti-MAF arsenic added in.

K&N is hype. A paper filter flows twice as much as any motor can handle.

I bought the K&N a few years ago. Looks like I need to go to Zim's and get a stock paper air filter!

K&N ruined the Autothority chip & MAF I had put on my 911 years ago. :mad: put the old AFM back on and different chip, and runs smooth again and stronger.:burnout:

in full disclosure, I still run a K&N cone on my 911 that goes with a tuned intake horn that replaced the stock air box/filter. I know the guy who developed it. replacing the air box with his final version of the tuned intake cone did add a couple HP on the dyno. he stopped selling them some time ago. now builds full containment seats for LaJoie.

from reputable sources I hear the stock air box is one of the intake restrictions. some people cut the side off to expose the air filter. I hear that helps even if you keep the paper filter. and someone makes a replacement for the side that is open if you don't want to cut the stock one.

Snake oil, schmake oil. Some of us don't want the big ugly honking airbox on.

You may not personally like or want a K&N, but I equate the urban legend on how "bad" they are with the statement that Carreras are susceptible to valve guide problems.

I don't think they are that bad, but I'm not sure they are as good as they say either. I'm thinking mainly in referance to the drop in, stock replacement, varient.

Hey! If someone has a 3.2 airbox that they'd like to sell, I'd like to buy. I'm serious.

I am surprised to hear all the negative comments, I have used the K&N in all my other cars and trucks and never had anything but better milage, especially in the V10 Excursion, I am a bit fussy and probably clean them more than usual or required and am light on the reoiling which is why I service them so often.

Bruce Anderson's dyno testing has shown it won't get you any additional power on a 3.2, as the dyno tests show the stock filter can already flow more than the engine can process (duh. Them porsch engeneers are smart! No make air filter too small).

Good rule of thumb - Don't replace your factory Porsche part with an aftermarket part unless you have solid proof that the aftermarket part is better than the factory part. Because almost all of the time, it isn't.

K&N is one of the greatest marketing companies of all time, though.
