Post Wheel bearings...

Seeing as how I do not have a great amount of faith in what the mechanic who did my PPI (on this, my first Porsche) told me (based on experience since but that is another story), I am curious as to how to determine if the wheel bearings on my car are in need of replacement. What is the indication? And how much of a nightmare is it to do?

Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

Oh, yeah, I forgot, it is the front bearings I am concerned with.

A quick test is to grab the tire, say at 9 and 3 o'clock. Wiggle back and forth. If you feel any play they might need adjustment. Since bearings are pretty cheap I just replaced mine when I was checking, but you can open them up, clean and repack if they are ok.

Even if you just repack them, you'll want to replace the rear grease seal. Not expensive or difficult to do.

Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and see if it wiggles, by grabing at 9 and 3 o'clock you are checking for play on the steering system.

Remember, the car has to be jacked up to do this test.

With the tire off the ground you only need to wiggle it gently. Otherwise, you may get movement from the fully extended strut. You can do a quick check without jacking the car up. Just pull/pull on the top of the tire as if trying to rock the car.

I test mine with the car on the ground, no problem. You should be able to feel a little movement in the hub if it's loose.
