Looking to buy an 1986 M491 Cabriolet. Found one from a private seller with 31k miles in white. He's willing to part with it for $31k. Is this a fair price...what is the general range these days?

That is a lot of money for an 86...
Although it seems to have low mileage, sometimes garage queens are more trouble than
a daily driver.
A more reasonable price if the car passes a PPI with flying colors would be in the 21-23 thousand range !
There are newer 993's with that kind of mileage that sell in the low 20's ...
If you have your heart set on that car,get a very good inspection at the least !
Cheers !

This is an M491 and they seem to trade for a considerable premium over standard cars. I can't imagine a decent M491 going for low twenties. If the car lives up to its mileage, has no accident history and it all-original, then that would seem to be a very fair price.

For a pristine 86 coupe (original paint, Fuch's wheels, well kept interior, 82k miles, immaculate service record, no engine/gear box work) I recently paid 22k just for your reference. Lot of folks said I overpaid by 2k..I and some very astute members here felt otherwise.

They are fairly rare and usually command a premium over std. coupes. The price of 31k is fair if condition is true.

Scott, my post was just meant to be a reference point for him to gain some insight on the pricing of a standard well kept '86 coupe. He can then add the premium for the M491 option.

If it checks out and you are willing to pay the premium for the M491 go for it. The car should be perfect for that price.

As well as the rear suspension mods, the wide front/rear wheel arches, M491 also incorporated a turbo rear spoiler, wraparound turbo chin spoiler, turbo wheels with brake technology derived from their 917 racing program.

Actually I believe the turbo spoilers were an option all be it just about all m491 cars have em, its really rare to buy one without. I have seen the 86 M491 cab on eBay recently without the spoilers with a 35k starting bid.

Spoilers are standard on a US delivered M491 car. To get it without spoilers, you had to specify the "Non spoiler option" (I believe that option no. was 470).
The Factory Turbo Look market is a strange one. They all command somewhat of a premium, but if you find one with ultra low miles in perfect original condition, it can command a very large premium. The thing is, 31K miles is very low for an 86 911, but for the hard core "Turbo Looker" it is only average-low.
IMO, if that 31K mile car checks out as a 31k mile car should (i.e., it should be all original, original paint, etc. and basically show like a new car), $31,000 is in the ballpark. If it was an '87, it would be easier to sell.
Places like Sloan, truespeed, etc. would get $31K for the '86 if it is in excellent condition. A private seller can do it if they get lucky enough and find the right buyer who wants that exact car. That buyer is out there and that price, for sure. The thing is, the seller may find him in a day, or it may take a year.
