Aw, man...nobody likes my Twists?

I don't really care for Fuchs wheels. It's either the Twists or the Porsche ten spokes. Those are the only Porsche wheels I like.

Large offset wheels, no matter which ones, just look wrong on a t-bar 911. IMO.

Thanks. Looking at your avatar, may I assume you're running twists as well? Maybe I'm not the only one?

Enjoy your new girlfriend.

You aren't the only one with the twists. As long as you like them who cares....

Featherpillow, can you describe the differences in performance you noticed between the 964 and your SC? I'm currently looking for a 911 and I too have set out for a 964, but also like the SC. I've owned several sports cars and I don't want to be disappointed with the performance of the SC. In the past, I've owned a 1983 Porsche 928S 5 speed, a 2002 Camaro Z28, a 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo, and driven an 88 Porsche 944 numerous times. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I've owed: An 88 944, a 2002 Camaro Z28 (310 HP), a 2004 Jetta GLI VR6 (200 HP), and a 1990 Toyota Supra Turbo. Thanks for any input, and congrats on that beautiful ride!!
Why are you overlooking Carreras?

Featherpillow, can you describe the differences in performance you noticed between the 964 and your SC?
Hmm. Good question. A quick answer would be to say that the SC feels like more of a no-holds barred sports car and the 964 feels a little 'softer'. The 964 reminds me a little more of a refined German sedan, at least in off the line acceleration and ride. Handling is a different story, of course. The 964's I drove all had triptronic, so I can't compare the 915 tranny to the G50. Funny thing, I liked the '92 964 better than the '90 and '91, but mostly for the smoother ride. For handling and road feel I preferred the SC over everything except the 997.

The SC seems to me like the sort of car that will easily land you in a ditch if you don't know what you're doing. The road is very apparent and the steering very responsive. It took me a little bit of driving before I could avoid killing the car or peeling out in 1st gear. The low end torque of the SC is insane, and I feel it more than the other 911's I've driven. The only car I've driven that really reminds me of the SC for brutal off the line torque is the Audi S8. My A8L is a distant second, but off the line torque is where the similarity ends (don't get me started on my A8L; I really hate that car).

I experienced none of that in the 964. It's a fast car for sure; the engine is bigger than the SC. The ride felt smoother, but the trade off is that you feel less of the road as a driver. I don't know if you've driven a Cayman, but the 964 and the Cayman remind me of each other in certain aspects.

It seemed to me that later 911 revisions implemented more safe guards against driver ignorance. They also add more creature comforts. I think the biggest reason why I was initially drawn to the 964 is because I have had several German luxo-barges over the years (BMW 740 Sport, Audi A8L, etc.), and I tend to like the ride quality they offer. In the end the SC won me over because of its sports car feel, plus the prices on used SC's can't be beat compared to the other 911 family members.

Personally I thought that the 915 transmission came across as a little dorky at first, although I've heard that there are short-shift solutions that really minimize this. It took me a little getting used to until I realized that double-clutching seems to help (especially between 3 and 4). Once I got used to it, it was no big thing.

Lots of low-end torque???

If you're having to double-clutch to help 3-4 shifting, then I'd suggest the trans needs attention. A short-shift kit will only exacerbate the issue and hasten a repair bill.

A 964 is more modern, more powerful too. But you will not get the same driving experience. I'd go with the Carrera over the SC to get the Motronic system instead of CIS. But SC's are loved too, and that is only my opinion. I think the Carrera is the best of both worlds into which you are looking.
