Targas "need" a tail (totally my opinion which is worthless to anyone else). The later cars with flares carry a tail nicely, and I particularly like the Carrera tail on a Targa. The early car's narrow slabsiddedness reacts to the vertical intrusion of a tail a bit differently...not the same as the more sculpted later cars. With the polished pedals and duck, Ed's car is "relavant" 15 years before it was made. Add a carrera tail, and Ruby is 20 years younger - both scream performance. A Carrera/SC Targa can do this where a Coupe is...a coupe, of which I prefer no tail - early or late. My $.02.

"narrow slabsiddedness reacts to the vertical intrusion of a tail"
THAT's a phrase worth reusing - in discussing politics, sex & art.
my take (who cares!?) is that the Targa is such a corruption (pls note I didn't say ugly) of the pure 911 lines that the more "factory-informed" geegaws one wishes to add, the merrier.
thus, a widebody slantnose Targa w/ spoilers, dams, boxed-rockers, vents & God-knows what-else is just peachy (only when exceptionally well-executed, natch), esp in one of those wild tropical pastels the Germans loved in the 60s & 70s. wow man...
now I'M liking the Targa.

AGW911,
Your car has, or originally had, a 2.4 liter motor. The 2.2 was used for 1970 and 1971. The 2.4 was used in 1972 and 1973.
I would not swap the motor if it is original; a 1972 2.4E Targa is a pretty nice, fairly valuable car. Your car came with 15x6 Fuchs which used the three-prong center cap, not the later ring type. The part number for your wheels is 911.361.020.00. There is also a date stamp on the webbing.
You should change the decklid. I don't think ducktails look right on Targas, speaking as the owner of a 1973 S Targa.

My intention is to make the best of the engine I have. I have to work out the cost of sqeezing more hp out of the 2.2 vs swapping out with something more powerful. More research to do on that one. My intention at this point for the 2.2 is to swap out the cams for S cams, S or S type pistons and possibly MFI (possible increase in reliability and throttle response, I know there are a million opinions on this one and look forward to hearing them all).
I have the original decklid. Not a fan of the ducktail on the narrow body. I do like it on the widebody, a la Ruby.
As for the Fuchs, I'm going to get the original spec sheet while I am in Germany in October (yes, it's October now. This damn tour keeps getting longer and longer, up to 11.5 months now).

Similarities are scarey!! Signal yellow 72 targa, they even have the same crack in the dash!! I just did the interior and swapped the headlights. I personally don't think there's anything wrong with 14" fuchs......
IMHO, the more you do to this car the more you'll want to keep it. Once you do the body work and paint you'll have done all the 'hard' work. I would enjoy it as is and if eventually, you're going to do a swap, do a PMO'd 3.0 keep it simple and strong!

Mine has had a single battery conversion done. Not sure if I will leave it that way or not. I have a few areas that I wouldn't mind photographed for comparison some time.
