72 Targa Finally Home!!!
Well, I finally got her home. Tried to get these up earlier, but I had two weeks at home and spent as much time with the family as possible. Fly out tomorrow.
A few surprises, but overall I'm pretty happy with what I got for 6K. Biggest surprise was the front suspension pan. Probably doesn't need a whole new one, but I think I will replace the whole thing for good measure. Other than that the body seems sound.
My list of projects for it. Trying to keep it as original as possible, but a few upgrades.
- replace the clothe seats with leather from the S.
- replace cracked dash
- I have the original deck lid, it's going back on.
- new seals all around
- glass out repaint. It's the wrong colour now. Signal yellow was the original colour.
- Source a proper 2.4 for it. I have a 70 2.0, but would like to have the proper engine. Might go with an S instead of T though.
- Probably replace suspension bushing for good measure.
Overall, not a lot of work to do, but it will keep me busy for the winter for sure.
Now for the pics. (In case anyone is wondering. I took the driver side door off so I can put it on blocks and work on it without having to worry about room to open the door.)

Just noticed another thing to replace. The Fuchs (not sure if they are real and not sure how to check) are 14". 72 was 15 and an option on the T. Guess I will try to trade these ones on some 15s.

That looks pretty sound for the price. Nice job! As much as I like ducktails, I do think the stock lid will look better on the narrow body. I still have my stock lid too, I even painted it when I did the car 8 years ago. I keep thinking of puttiing it on for kicks someday.
You're going to have a blast with this.

Good project. The early cars have a special quality about them. Don't get in a hurry and do a bunch of research, an "S" engine with mechanical fuel injection(MFI) can be quite costly, not to mention the paint and body work. So, to be a bit contrary; overall you do have a lot of work to do. Few cars are worth it, but that car will blow your mind with performance and owner-satisfaction, not to mention investment value if properly sorted out. Great find.
Good luck and keep us updated.

All advice is well taken. No hurry, especially since I won't see it again until late August!!! Lots of time to shop for parts and do more research. An S engine would be nice, but I know unless I stumble upon a super find it is going to be way out of budget.
I would like to order to original spec sheet on it. Anyone know how to go about that and how long it takes? I will be in Germany in August/September. Is it any faster to go get it in person?

AGW, seems you got a good car & I think things are going to turn out well.
I would tend towards getting the car on the road sooner rather than later, so I could assess all the running systems - that way, I'd have a better fix on the totality of the project before embarking on the appearance & comfort items. I would also be open to a 3.0 or even a (good!) 2.7 as an alternate to the 2.4. But it is YOUR project & if you know you're doing a complete resto eventually, what does the order matter?
Contact PCNA about getting the CoA. Alternatively, while in Germany, you should visit the Porsche Museum & ask how to get info on your car direct from the factory (across the street). Bring docs that prove your ownership & photos... you might just get what you need.
And if you don't, you'll still get to see lotsa Porsches, like this 911 on display...

I plan to hit the museum for sure when I am there. Already told my wife we are working it into the schedule. Hopefully Oktoberfest makes the schedule too!!!
I am pretty sure the car was originally a Euro car. Does that make a difference when ordering paperwork? Would PCNA still be able to help with that one?

On the engine topic. I wanted to keep it original, partially to keep it true to what it once was and also for investment value. Would an "upgrade" to a 2.7 or 3.0 hurt the value?
