3.2 Engine Longevity
Hello Folks,
I dont own a Pcar yet but hopefully soon. I just wanted to pass this on and see if this is typical for well maintained 3.2's.
I was down at a local marina on Sunday and there was a red 87 TL parked beside me. The owner showed up and I asked him if it was a TL? He replied "yeah Turbo Look, and I hope to get a few more miles out of it". I asked why and he replied "it only has 580,000 Kilometers (400,000 miles) on it". I asked if it has been rebuilt and hes said "only the top end". My jaw dropped. The car looked to be in good shape. Is this typical and can it be aceived with proper maintenance?

Drifting
Yes. Not uncommon. They actually seem to thrive when they are driven more often. There was one that used to DE at Sebring with us - 1984 Carrera - it had around 400,000 miles - was a daily for years - had a top end at 200,000 - and the guy drove it hard.
He chuckled and said it always seemed to run better after a run at the track...

I've seen a lot of them with over 300,000 miles on them. The harder they are driven & driven right, the better they run. My 88 Carrera had a top end at 60,000 mi, but it was due to valve guides. I always redline it each time I drive it after it reached temperature.

I've read about the SC's getting to 300k miles and above, but never a Carrera. I'm sure it's possible but even the SC's that go that high are probably quite rare.

I have a T engine in the 914-6 that between me and the PO has gone around three times on the odo. I think it's got more than 300k on the clock in other words. From my own experience, a 3.2 can go well over 300k and maybe over 400k depending on how it's driven and maintained, and how quick you are to pull the trigger on a top end overhaul.

The 3.2 engine has the same bottom internals as the 3.3 turbo motor and being NA it has no stress. The heads are different from the turbos and weaker (Valve Guides and Heat capablilites). The top end rebuild is a must at some point around 100K+. So with proper maintenance, I believe it can go the distance.
Most of my friends get shocked when they see 140K on the odometer and can't believe how well the car drives and shows. Of course she gets the best care and is only driven for pleasure.
