86' Carrera meets 997.2 C4S PDK
so Amar and I met - he wanted to drive my 86' - had coffee and took him for a beautiful ride...let him drive it...mayb e 30+ minutes.... he loved it. Really convinced him to get one. he cant wait to buy one. thinking about that new car, very excited!
Then he invited my to drive his brand new 997.2 PDK with sport package - how could I resist
impressions: its big, heavy, sluggish, comfy and beautiful... oh you push a button and ....OK that's better, I sort of get it.... so he says "drive it like it was meant to be driven" ----- he dont know me vewwy well do he (I was polite, but did drive it)
gotta admit, its a hell of a car and I dont know if his butt cheeks have ever been tighter... then he shows me the last button (wish we had that on the whole ride) OMG!! what a monster - paddle shifting at near redline was OMG amazing - I had a huge smile on my face (as did he)
So we pull back into say our good-bye and sit in the car talking a while...I think I "un-convinced" him to get an old car and convinced him to go to the track --- he saw side of his car he was un aware of and the light came on. I am hoping to see him many more times and watch his growth in driving. What a fantastic car he has!!
THANKS AMAR !!
anytime you want to drive mine... the keys are yours!
BTW my movie didnt record!
as for those who would not do this.... it was a mutually beneficial meeting and I would do it again (strange because I am normally a little selfish with my cars, it was good for me too)
there is an open invitation anytime Amar - have a safe trip home

I just got back from a 3 day DE at MidOhio with my 85 Carerra 3.2 that has a few suspension/engine upgrades.
Porsche had two new Boxter Spyders there and they were taking people rides on the track with professional drivers. they both had the PDK and sport packages. the drivers left PDK in full auto with sport mode engaged.
yes, these new Porsches are incredible. between the capabilities of the Spyder and the DRIVER, almost scary fast. the PDK in auto is VERY smart. incredibly fast shifts, and on braking it would down shift and blip the throttle automatically.
if I had the $$ I would love to have a new Porsche. but I love my old 911, so visceral. and also love my old 84 928S daily driver.

it is a 'relative' reference.
of course our old Porsches will need maintanance as time goes by. but no BIG car payment each month. when reading the paper I see the car adds for LEASES on a new 911 that is more than my house payment.
regarding the wife. in all fairness, she is a very frugal woman. over our 31 yr marriage it is her frugal influence that has kept me from buying a newer Porsche and being in debt up to my eyeballs.
I am hoping to retire within the next couple years. accumulating new porsches and the associated payments are not part of that plan.
hmm.... must check latest lottery ticket.

PS ... again.
there was a new 997 GT3RS parked next to me at MidOhio.
(we need an emoticon for lust ... )
how do they afford these wonderful toys? that included a newer 3500 dualie, diesel tow truck and enclosed traler.
and there was the guy who went off track in a new BMW V8 M3 ... twice. second time into the wall big time. Looked pretty sad crunched up and on a flat bed. I guess he can afford to learn the hard way.

Ed: Thank you for giving me one of the best days of my life and that is an understatement. Through your driving skills you educated me on what Porsche's are all about. Boy, was I impressed. Too bad we did not take pictures...that is a good excuse to get together sometime in the future. Cannot wait to see you and learn from you on the DE days.

and FWIW... you wont crash - I promise!! These are very well controlled and instructed events. The DS day is going to really make you want more!
I talked with Bill B (lead instructor) this afternoon and told him about our exchange and what we both came away with. Then I asked if we both sign up for an event if we can be in the same "group" and he said... no problem! - that will be wonderful for me to watch you become more familliar and comfortable with your car... what is truely "my reward"
Take care and I will talk to you again soon!

Interesting thread since I am planning on going from an '87 911 to a much newer one (06-08). I'm dying to drive one so if anyone in the metro Atlanta area wants to swap cars for an hour or so I'm up for it!
