Default Gonna try again

Well, I seem to be good luck for sellers. The 3 cars I've been really interested in have sold before I get past the initial inquiries, regardless of time on the market. Maybe I can take my act to Vegas!

Anyway, I've got another I'm looking at. It's an 84 Targa with 132k miles. Asking $14.5k. Owner a PCA member until he decided to sell. Clutch replaced at 110k, leather and carpets replaced in 2005. ECU replaced in 2003, not sure why, will have to find out. Clock does not work. AC has not been used and believed to just need a charge. The paint is reported original and in good shape other than normal stone chips. The only flaw mentioned is a small dent on one of the headlight trim rings, pic included. Service records back over 10 years, manual included, tools complete, replacement air pump. No reported engine or transmission work done except oil changes, and valve adjustments by Porsche mechanic or owner. Owner states may leak a drop of oil after driven, but can sit for weeks with no leaks.

So, given the mileage and service history what might I expect this car needing in the near future? Should the mileage be a concern? I've been mainly looking at sub 100k mile cars and have a hard time getting past that.

I've included a few close up crops of the lower left/right areas of the engine bay that caught my eye and was wanting to know if the welds were other than factory? The seam appears so clean until the last few inches where the weld begins. Just did not look right. Normal?

Overall thoughts? Worth pursuing to PPI?

Still picking away at the details of the car.

From the seller.
"The transmission syncros have not been replaced. It is probably the next thing I would do if I don't sell the car. I can tell if I try to shift too quickly, that they are not what they used to be. Not a problem if you don't try to speed shift."

What kind of cost is involved here?

Well you really need to drive it or have an experienced 915 guy drive it to really see. The fact is you shouldn't be speed ****ing a 915 anyway .. lots of idea of costs of rebuilding a 915 . Do a search .. you can either completely rebuild it ..or do a "budget "rebuild and put in first and second gear synchros and dog teeth. i would bet it is first and second having issues. There are lots of cars out there without gearbox issues so pass on this one if it is bad..

Would this likely be noted during a PPI? I think I would factor the potential 915 rebuild into any offer I make.

absolutely if done by a competant shop .. he did disclose the gearbox so be prepared for " that is why it is priced that way " ..

Well, I did specifically ask about the gearbox in order to get the information. I do appreciate his honesty in the matter. Does not mean I'm not going to use this as a bargaining chip.

Unfortunately, I'm cross country and cannot drive the car. I'll either have to pass, or trust in a PPI.

Thanks...it doesn't look that clean right now but hopefully by tomorrow afternoon it will be back to that.

That Targa looks good, I like the color combo.

Since the owner seems to keep track of things, ask about oil consumption. It can give you an idea of valve guide and seal condition. Spec is typically quoted at 1 qt (or less)/1000 miles. Oil consumption is to be distinguished from leaks.

Sent the owner a message this afternoon about oil consumption. Waiting to hear back.
