on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 is a no go) then 9.9
-you are not the diy type
-you have not learned to defer to your father who in this case may be heads & shoulders above you in terms of understanding - mechanically how things work
-the project is a moneypit (including from the get go)
-tools/manuals??

suggestions..pick something easier - like a well working car & upgrade suspension or turn it into a lightweight street car or better yet a model ship or 1/24th car model

Sorry guys but my sarcasm isn't coming through. I did the math about 20 min after I started the post and figured that I could buy a real 73 RS for the time, energy and money spent to make this happen. I may try a 3.2 to RS backdate as a starter project instead. How else can you spend $60K to get a $25K car.

I will be honest though, I really couldn't care less if I finish any project at all. It is more to spend time with my dad and still be able to yell at him for not doing things my way while he yells at me for not doing things his way.

Cue OldGuy telling us how receptive this place is to sarcasm.

I especially liked this comment

I haven't worked out the $60K investment turning into a $25K car, but I can tell you how to spend $50K to get a $15K car.

In looking at those numbers further, I suppose the net return is the same, but I have less money at risk.

Daniel just what i was thinking .... two guys who can't get along ona project ... and the right to bare arms .. I would say it is a 10,000 on the 1-10 scale. kind of reminds me of a funny line by a guy in the O.t. some guy asked where people keep there guns with the kids in the house ... one guy answered ......." real close "

I think you will be much happier getting a decent SC or 3.2 and doing a backdate.

Although the person posting that shell for sale pointed out that being a 73, that it is the correct year for an RS, to me that is of little value. A car is either an RS (big $$) or a replica (something purely for enjoyment).

Starting with a nice, rust-free later car (that runs) will still be a massive amount of work to make into an nice RS tribute car and will provide the father/son project opportunity, but with a visible finish line as well as the probability of not completely blowing yourself our financially.

There are running, sort-of-OK SCs out there for $10k-ish...

This is an odd post to start with. Are you asking complete strangers to rate your overall pain threshold? Unless you want to buy your Father out of a car at a later date before you guys almost "kill" each other (again) don't do it. I can't imagine a better way to test your relationship (again) than an enclosed space with heavy throwable objects.

Look at it this way--the car is in California. How many HUNDREDS of us are there with the expertise to do something with a car like this if the price was right? Yet no one has shown up. I suspect the price would have to approach zero to get someone interested. And then you'd have to have a whole shop worth of donor parts laying around, ready to install AFTER you've dealt with the bodywork.

(My '73.5 RS clone that I'll likely never do anything with is a 100% rust free original roller and there really has never been any interest in it above giveaway.)
