I am looking for a project for my father and I to do together. We kinda know our way around cars but are by no means experts. I live in PA and the car is in CA. I have never done a project bigger than changing oil, he has rebuilt an Austin Healys engine.

We worked together for two years and could have sold tickets to our fights because he just never knew when he was wrong(always). I had to buy him out of our company before someone died.

Am I crazy to take this on?

i'd say you should think about it. it's one thing to buy a nice porsche with a blown motor & trans, but that car needs just about everything...

I have no input into a numerical designation on how bad of an idea it is, but Note to self - Don't start restoration project. I was going to add "unless...", but I decided that not starting period is the right answer.

Restoration projects are for people with either a lot more money or a lot more time than I have (or a lot more of both).j

1-10....10 being bad? I'd say it's an 9.2. Find one done and enjoy it for a lot less money in the long haul.

With your experience this would be a BIG MISTAKE!!!! Buy something nice that requires alot less work to make it nicer looking. Get one with no rust low milage so that you can take apart to add new carpets, seats, maybe dash, springs...and so on. You also do not have the benefit of taking this one apart and seeing how it was put together. Listen to what he is saying...he put too much money in it and not have enough time after four years. Stay away from that one. Engine and transmission not included... 9.999!

if you wish to flirt with having a father/son car project flavored version of The Shining, this one might just about do it.
better yet, buy a servicable 911, give it a good once-over on a weekend, then the two of you go on a 3000 mile / one week trip together. advantages...
- finite schedule (unlike a 911 restoration)
- cost projection possible to within one order of magnitude (unlike a 911 restoration)
- if there's anything left of the car (& your relationship) afterwards, you can always sell it (unlike too many 911 restorations)
bonus: you guys can spend the drive arguing about what restoration project to do together "someday".
risk: afterwards, you guys decide to restore the car & ruin all the memories of the trip.

wish I could have done such a trip w/ my dad...

Hmmm, okay....its a BAD IDEA and you will REGRET doing it. ( I know the interpretation of regret not doing something...it this case its regret doing it just like the owner appears to have regrets.) Now, you can buy a 911 that would not be as challenging and then you might regret not doing it. That could be a wonderful experience...but not with this one. Think about it...
car is all apart no benefit or experience how that was done. No engine or transmission...find out how much they cost...and do you have all the parts that connects everything together in the engine compartment? Are you going to have to buy another car as a donnor car? This is a clear case specially for someone without experience...even with someone with experience the time and cost to find all the missing items is not worth it.

That car isnt worth 6k... wheels or no wheels. IF it had and engine and trans included then it would be worth 5-7k. Its basically an entire resto. Probably easily up into the 40-50k range without even thinking... Unless you are very hands on, this is way too much project for someone who has changed oil. RUN AWAY! I had one just like this. Sold it for 5k and it had the engine and trans and was a 72.

My recommendation... Now i have an 83 SC. Paid 13k for it. 95k miles. All the projects are fun... still in way more than its worth... 30k and counting... but i can drive it 10 months out of the year when im not in my project mode... Its paint is an 8.5/10-, interior 8/10. mechanical 8/10.
Last winter I did a complete Elephant Racing Suspension kit... 3500 w/ the alignment/cb.
This winter i am doing a complete PMO ITB EFI conversion... 5000...
Summer before that it was a complete Rannaire AC upgrade and Targa Top restore... 4500...
expensive yes, can be.. but fun projects while you can still drive the car... and if I choose not to do a project this summer... the car is still driveable and ready to go...
not like a major resto project where it sits unusable unless you go out and immediately drop 30-35k.
Just my .02 cents...

here are some price points...

rebuilt period correct engine ... 15k (more because you dont have a core, dont have Fuel system, wiring, etc)
rebuilt period correct trans.. 5-7k (more because you dont have a core)
Decent paint job.. 5-7k
Welding and Fabrication (Rear Seat Area, Floor pans, etc).. 3-5k and counting...
Suspension rebuild 4k (without Labor)
Brake Rebuild 2k (without Labor)

and you havent bought all the little things... light bulbs, fuses, wiring, headliner, battery, tires, you laugh.. but those little things will cost you 3-5k.

Why do you think he hasnt sold the car at 1/2 price for this long?
