Post Steering wheel removal

I am trying to remove the steering wheel from 1975 911S. I am trying not to brake it while doing so. The steering wheel is the original oiece with a big scare signal pad. Thanks for your help!

I’m not sure from your description what wheel you have but most stock wheel centers from this time frame “pop off” w/a little pressure. Be sure to unhook your horn wire! The steering wheel is held in place by one large nut (24 mm?) & is not on a tapered shaft. Once the nut is off gently tap the back of the wheel to free it, you don't need a wheel puller. Mark the shaft & wheel hub to get it back on straight.

Mine required much more force than I was comfortable with, but it finally came off. Thought there was something holding it other than the nut, but wasn't, other than 25 years.

Wink

Maybe spray a little WD-40 or pentrating fluid onto the splines to help it?

I used the 'club' to hold the wheel so I could enough leverage to remove the nut (27mm on my '84). That was a great tip I got from a Pelican Parts tech article.

It's always a good idea to disconnect the battery prior to removing the steering wheel. Also check your horn wires for any wear. My horn was going off discrimnately, and I located the source as a worn wire at the point where it meets the horn button. Oh yeah, don't forget to mark the steering wheel position with chalk before you remove the steering wheel!

I replaced the wheel on my 87 over the winter. It was tough to get the nut loose until I went to the hardware store and bought the biggest breaker bar they had. Then it was a piece of cake.

The advice is right . The centre pad "pops "off with a good pull on the edges. A big shifter is needed to loosen the nut . The bigger the better.

so far as removing the horn pad without breaking it - I was nervous as it didn't just pull straight off or unclip easily, then I sussed that on my '71 2.2 you have to rotate the pad whilst pulling towards you - then it pops off easliy and lets you get at the 27mm nut
