added 1000 lbs
add 1000 cc
double the HP
reduce 0-60 time by 43%
increase top speed by 20%
reduce Cd by 25%

That's 34 years of progress.

Things peaked out in 94 or 96, IMHO.

The 964 is still the best... Really a pleasure to drive, and also a challenge.

You beat me to it! 993 definitely a 6 speed.

I'll take a '98 Turbo S of that line up or an '89

Seat of the pants dyno usually gives every additional gear the equivalant of 100hp. 5 speed came in 89. The 3.6 964 is a beast. The 993 cars are simply amazing. Much more fun than the 996+ in driver satisfaction IMHO. I built(and rebuilt)/crewed a 92 in IMSA and it could push 450hp in "stock" form. Superb sports car for sure.

Interestingly the 1996 car is only a little over 150 lbs lighter than the current car. This shows that Porsche (despite the popular opinion) has been doing a good job on the weight management side of things, as the current car is fundamentally larger to boot.

Each one of them is an outstanding car with advantages/disadvantages relative to the others.

I also have high hopes for the new 9A1 motors. I understand that these motors have been subject to the largest amount of pre-introduction development of any Porsche motor yet. I just may be that the "integrated dry sump" approach may have come of age.

It was a sad day when the Corvettes were lighter than the 911(996)
