Welcome to Rennlist.
Many of us around here use Interstate batteries for our Porsches. I also got 9 years of use out of a Porsche battery that was made by Douglas in the US. I use Johnson Controls batteries in many daily drivers with good success, though I tend to just toss out batteries after 4 years (and 4 winters) of use in my daily driver cars.
Also, feel free to visit the 997 board on Rennlist for more specific answers to your questions.

Sears, Walmart, etc. beware. Getting the battery out is real easy, but the inexperianced wrench will pry it out with his elbows on top of the fenders. The metal in the fenders is real thin on top and you will have dents where said wrench pulled the battery out (a big problem on 928s as well-alloy fenders). A fender cover helps, but this requires a technique that one does not rest the weight of the battery on the fender, even if through his elbows. Welcome to Rennlist and get us some pictures.
