Default Alternator Fan Housing ...

Started out for an errand run this weekend and BAM!!! sounded like an explosion. Alternator light came on and I pulled over .... The fan literally fragmented and took part of the housing with it. I assume there was a crack on one of the blades and when it went ... it took the rest of the blades with it. I got it home and have taken what's left of the housing etc. apart. I need to replace the fan, the fan housing and the outer piece of the pulley. I checked the close dismantlers and couldn't find an old housing. There seems to be a waiting list nearly everywhere. The car is an 85 911 Coupe ... 3.2 stock. I found an aftermarket version at Vertex ... any recent experience with their product? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated ... thanks in advance.

Oh boy. This could be the first case of fan housing failure due to the cracks connecting.

Partshaven and 20th Street Auto both had them last year for the 3.2 Carrera. I think there is a 930 fan housing that will work as well.

Sorry, no personal experience w the Vertex unit.

Thanks for the replies ... just to clarify ... it was the fan that fragmented. Some of the pieces took part of the housing, enough to want to replace it. I found some old threads that talked about the Vetex after market version. It seems like the casting quality is the issue. Some fit quite well and others have trouble, even with some extra machining. I will try a few more dismantlers but if I cant find a good old one I will try the aftermarket version.

even if you find a bit of a rough one can't you have it painted or powder coated .. some of them look real purdy with the right combination..

You might try ebay as well, but be careful. You must make sure that it fits the 3.2 911.

Contact EASY www.easypor.com or DC in NC. www.dcauto.com I've brought used parts from both companies. Jim is great to deal with @ EASY, and he is honest and straight forward.

If you do go the Vtex route, keep us posted. I've not heard of one letting go like yours.

Those damned 3.2's are so powerful, they literally destroy the fans.....

Again thanks for all of the replies. I have just short of 148,000 on this car. I have a 993 that will be my daily driver once I get it back from a reseal job. I had this one up for sale, but will put that on hold while I fix it. I have not found a used housing so I bit the bullit and orderd the Vertex version.

This car has been great car and a good learning experience for me ... just one more test :-)

update ... still working on it. I received the Vertex housing and swapped out everything. It was close but I felt like it wasn't quite there yet. I searched this forum and Pelican for pictures and sure enough ... the fit is off a bit. I talked to the shoop I take my 993 to and he says everyone he has used needed a little "adjusting". I will take it in and get some advice as to what needs to be cleaned up. It is not off much ... but I will make sure before I finish the install. I will include pictures when I get it done.

Thanks again for all of the advice ...

It's not surprising that it would take some fitment. OEM parts fit quite close.

and if i am not mistaken the timing reference mark is on that housing so it has to pretty well fit perfect.
