How many of you...?
use your 911's as daily or "almost" daily drivers? I know this question may seem redundant, and Ive heard arguments both for and against using older 911's almost every day (whether permitting) - what do you guys do? If I grab up an SC or 84-89 Carrera in good condition - can it be used as a daily driver assuming about $1k per year in maint?

Thanks!

I do. No problem, if you count on fuel price tag and more frequent oil changes and tune-ups. Some compromises need to be reached, as you cannot carry large stuff, or too many people (max 2?). Otherwise, it´s a pleasure to drive daily, and you´ll get to know your car a lot better. Mine is an ´86 carrera.

I drive a 66 912 with a carberated '81SC engine everyday with the exception of winter. Last year it had a 2.0E 911 motor and I drove it everyday then as well. I can honestly say the maintence has been excellent for such an old vehicle, the only "broken" thing being a fan belt, I've replace the rear pads as well other than that just standard oil changes and routine maintenance. Realize the basic chassis is 37 years old and nothing has less that 100k miles except the 3.0 motor with about 85k.

My wife’s ’87 Carrera is her daily driver. We have a second set of wheels & tires, M&S all weather radials for winter. At 3-4K oil change intervals and a 55 mile daily round trip we shop for good prices on mobile 1 all the time!

My 78 SC was a anytime/daily driver until my last oil change. My mechanic found several colorful flecks of metal in the oil filter. Said something about "imminent catastrophic failure".
So I'm rebuilding the engine this winter. Plan to use it as a daily driver again starting in the spring.

350 miles a week with a 86 Carrera. I would expect your maintainence costs to be closer to $1500/yr. There are more comfortable cars out there, ok face it most every car out there is more comfortable, but you will be driving the best looking one by far.

82 sc with 87 3.2 engine. i drive it every day as my primary vehicle. i'm in it for about 3 hours a day in rush hour traffic and highway+ speeds about 350 mi/wk. i also use it for Drivers Ed about once every 5 weeks. it's been great!

My 88 coupe has 75,000 on it and everything works. For most 14 year old cars this is the excaption not the rule. If you like to tinker with and work on your own car, 911's are perfect and I feel they are extremely reliable, especially when the owner truly knows and cares for his vehicle. People who do "defered maintenance" where they don't take care of the small stuff and procrastinate tend to have more problems or many small ones. As far as driving, there is nothing that even comes close in my opinion to the rewards of driving a 911. My wifes new BMW is ok but it is a steptronic saved by the sport package. Mark

Jack,
that 911T of yours is absolutely stunning, must go like stink as well with that engine!!! I just love that shape in black...pity that in Singapore we only have three 911 in that shape...one of which is a 911S...too rare to get a hold of.
