Default Newb to 911 Forum --- Radio question

Hi Guys/Gals,

I just picked up an '89 Targa last week and am sorting through the details of the car. It appears to be all original except for the old school cell phone, Ungo Box alarm and Alpine radio.

I'd like to take the sound system back to stock as I don't plan on using it much. Does anybody know what radio was shipped with the '89s as original?

I ran my options through the Kindel database and found the options below:

Code Option Description
018 Sport steering wheel with elevated hub
158 Radio "Monterey" - 86 "Reno" - 87
243 Shorter gear shift lever
286 High intensity windscreen washer
288 Headlight washer
288 996: Light washers
348 Forged wheels - Grand Prix White
454 Automatic speed control
490 Hi-Fi sound system
494 2 speakers on back shelf
494 Amplifier system
C02 Equipped with catalytic converter

Its hard to tell if the Monterey or Reno was shipped with the car. Anybody have an '89 with similar options and the original radio that can advise what was fitted?

Thanks in advance.

Scott

Through some sleuthing, I was able to ascertain it was fitted with the Reno.

Anybody have one lying around they want to sell?

Tx,
Scott

Thanks iceman. Curious... Why don't you think it will work in the US?

I see you are in Cambridge. I'm about 80% sure I will be relocated to Waterloo in Q1-10. Are there any local gatherings in the area for P-cars?

BTW, nice choice on the XS360! I grew up riding an XS400.

well i am just not sure about the frequesncy intervals .. the one in my Porsche was plugged into another module that said " US antenna module " I think and radio place should be able to answer for sure ..

We do a gathering every saturday in Toronot for about 4 years now .. there are lots of guys in the K/W area it is just a bit of a challenge getting everyone together. We are starting now and I know about 5 local guys so a gathering will be in the works for spring. The season only has about another 7 weeks max here as after haloween the sub zero temps aren't good on the UHP tires.

can you belive I still have my bike ? ..it is packed away in the shed ...

Glad to see some P-car comradeship in the area. If I make the move, I will let you know and we can meet up via dog sled in the off season.

You better get the Yammer out and ride it before it gets too cold.

Alright! Another internal combustion device! Much lower maintenance than dogs.

If I remember correctly, Porsche offered an Alpine (OEM version) CD player in the '89's as an upgrade. However, I would think that this CD player would have a different option code than what you are showing above.

By having that "old" option code from the mid '80's, I bet your '89 came with a cassette player. My 1990 came with a Reno II cassette unit, but I would speculate that the Reno II came along for the '90 model year. I seem to remember the '89's that I've viewed as a concours judged came with a Reno SQR46.

I also think that vintage Alpine CD or cassette units look great in '80's 911's. Something about those 6 green buttons...

Hi Jay,
Thanks for the tips and links. I agree on the vintage Alpines with green "Chiclets". I think they look great.

Thanks Jay. I confirmed the Reno option and ordered the Dearborn from SW today. From what I've read, it is a direct plug-in replacement for the old units.

Let's see how it sounds....
