Best seats for 911SC?
#2
I purchased a pair of leather Cerullo seats (ad found in Panaroma or Excellence) that work with my 5pt harnesses. They have reclining backs so I can still get to the back if I need to. You can get suede on the seating surfaces if you want to increase grip, I chose all leather so they look stock. I'm very happy with them.

I am happy with Recaro SRD’s. They are comfortable and hold you in place much better than the stock seats. They have cutouts for harnesses, can be tilted forward, and sit slightly lower than stock seats.

Headroom is the key for me. I have the factory seats in my SC now and w/ a helmet I hit the roof, darn sunroof! It sounds like I either need a Targa or a new set of seats.
I just installed a Corbeau (sp?) in my honda and am very happy with it. Picked it up on Ebay for $100, new it's about $400. Beware of the seat brackets! I only have experience with the Honda, but the bracket they sold me for ~$80 had no chance of fitting. A friend of mine welding me up one instead. Just a heads up!

I have Recaro SRD's in my Carrera. They fit into the existing seat tracks, have cut-outs for the shoulder harness and anti-sub belt, and are very comfortable. On the track, the SRD keeps me firmly in place.

I put in Monaco RS seats in my 78SC using the OEM mounting sliders. This possibly lowered the seat, but no more than 1/2". They are quality seats, have provisions for a harness. The good thing is they come in a variety of materials and colors. I would buy them again.

Jeff,
First you need to decide what you want. For instance, is a reclining seat important? For me it is, as I move the back forward for the track and back a bit for the street. Is cloth vs leather vs suede important? Cloth helps keep you on the seat, although I've know some awfully good drivers with leather seats. Are you installing harnesses? If so, check which organization you'll be driving with. Some, our PCA region being one, require you to have purpose built seats for the shoulder harness to go through, not over. A harness bar with guides isn't a substitute for the right type of seat. A Recaro SRD, pictured in several guises, works. If the seat will be bolstered, how radical do you want it to be, ie, what are you going to be willing to climb into? Are you going to use 5 belt or 6 belt harnesses? A 5 belt harness typically goes through a hole in the bottom seat cushion. SRD's come with or without the slot (it's an extra cost option). Do call around and check prices, they vary alot.
Once you answer those questions, then you have to sit in seats. Like helmets, they fit differently. I too like SRD's, as they fit me well. They are also available in different colors. Note the logo's can also be done in matching colors (no extra cost):
The beige pair were installed in my 911SC. Normally, SC seat tracks have one slide/latch on one side to control forward/backward movement (the other side is just a slide). For safety purposes on the track, I bought a passenger side slide/latch and installed that along with the drivers side slide/latch on the drivers seat. That says to move your seat you have to lift on two handles. While it secures your seat better than a single slide/latch, there's the added humor benefit of watching when someone gets in and only expects there to be one slide/latch.

Not the cheapest, but...
Recaro SPG Pole Positions covered in leather, made as a replica of the 964/993 RS seats, by FVD in Germany.
The lower cushions come out on track days (velcro), giving you additional helmet clearance, more 'feel' of the track, a slightly narrower-than-usual fit, and the sub belt slot. Very comfortable for long trips, too.
Downside: reduced access to back seat.

I'll echo the reply of several others...
...Recaro SRDs are the way to go, in regards to what you're looking for.
Do yourself a favor and order them with the hole for the substrap. The set I ordered for my SC did not have the hole and I regretted it soon after.
They are very comfortable and hold you in like a champ...once you get bitten by the "track bug" you may want more...but for now, they will be "all that and a bag of chips" for what you're doing.
I have progressed to the Sparco Evo II and hate it when I want to toss a cooler in the back, even my helmet when driving to an Autocross!!
But when at a track event, I don't regret the progression to true racing buckets whatsover. If you have wide hips, or your significant other does - DO NOT BUY TRUE RACE-TYPE SEATS!! I'm a tall muscular guy, they fit me just perfectly - but some of my friends have a little more padding on the derrier...making the Evo IIs a bit tight for them.
Thank GOD I have a petite girlfriend!
