Post 911 SC Questions...

Hi there,
I hope to buy an SC Targa before the end of the year, and have a few questions;

Does a PPI usually include inspection of the head studs? Does the engine have to be removed to replace them? How much does this cost?
How much is a replacement clutch, including labour?
How much is a paint job? Is it more if I go for a different colour?
What and where is the DME relay? I hear they're prone to failure- how much is a replacement?
What kind of radar detector is best?
Does anyone have experience with the fiberglass targa tops offerd on Ebay?
Any answers/suggestions much appreciated!
Cheers,
Paul.

A ppi will cover anything--if you pay for it.

Clutch ~$1500 parts-n-labor.

Paint ~$4000 to do it right.

DME Not sure but cheap.

Radar Detector? You're not planning on speeding are you? <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

Fiberglass Don't joke...

Cheers,
Chris

SCs don't have DME relays. The DME and relay are part of the 3.2 Motronic system that was first intalled in '84. The relay's cost 30 dollars.

Some people say the the lower head studs can be replaced without removing the engine. I wouldn't want that assignment though.

As to the fiberglass tops, search on the PelicanParts 911 BBS for targa and fiberglass, and you will find the answer.

Good luck and take your time.

Thanks for the info- I guess I missed the post about the fiberglass targa tops- sounds like a bad idea. Okay, so a 'real' paint job is $4k. How about a passable one? Can I get one done cheaper if I do some of the prepping myself?
Thanks again!
Paul.

It depends on what's important to you. I know a racer who had his SC painted at Maaco for under $100, and they did a surprisingly good job. Factory quality, no, but $4000+, no.

If you really wanted to change colors and do it right, it would cost a ton of money. Consider all the places that your car is painted - door sills, engine compartment, inside fenders, underneath the front carpeting, etc. You'd have to pretty much take your car apart to have it repainted properly. You could of course just spray the outside a different color, but it would look pretty odd if the outside of the hood was one color and the inside was another color.

If you wanted to keep the same color and get the car repainted right, it would cost between $2K and $4K, depending on what had to be done. If there weren't many dings and dents and the car didn't need to be sanded down much, you're looking at the lower end of the range and as these things are added, you move to the higher end.

PPI does not usually check the head studs unless you ask them to. They will check compression and do a leak down test which will sometimes show a broken head stud. If the car has had a recent valve adjustment, they would know if there is a broken head stud. If not, I would have the PPI perform a check of the head studs and if they look good, go ahead and do a valve adjustment while they still have the valve covers off.
If you are going to paint the car, put aggod paint job on it. There is nothing worst than a new paint job that is half ***. Every time you wash your car you will get depressed.

I want a $4K full paint job. In the Bay Area, I've been quoted $5 - $9K to redo my '85 Targa
