Default Taking the plunge-Latest Chip (multi-map) Technology for 3.2 Carrera DME

I heard from Russell Berry last night that his multi-board chip setup for 3.2 Carreras is ready to go. Mine is ordered and shipping Monday. This product allows up to 8different maps. I'll have stock, performance, valet (ha!) and no start. There's room for one more.

I've had Steve W's in place for years, and I've been happy. It's just that it is set up for 93 octane, which I've had to mix since I've been back in Kalifornia (3:1 100/91), which can be a pain if I need more than 1 tank per trip. I do know every station in SoCal that sells VP100!

I machined my heads for twin-plugging when I built the motor a while back-just haven't decided on how to fire them, and spent a few $ on seat, suspension and wheels of late anyway. Russell's baby seems like what the Dr. ordered: flexibility at a reasonable price.

I'll let you know what I think and some pics when I receive it.

Cool! I was wondering what happened to the Russel Berry "multi-board" discussions. I was considering it until I stumbled upon a deal on a used SW chip for the cat bypass, 91 octane setup.

Ed, I am looking forward to your comparison. If you can manage some pics, that would be awesome.

Doesn't Andial have a Motronic splitter? You could use a 964 dizzy as well?

The Andial setup is probably what I'm leaning toward on the long term solution. Tunability, on the other hand is attractive too, but I probably should go the simple route so I don't fry my engine.

Back to the subject at hand, I'm really excited to try something new, so this multi-chip will be fun to play with. Expect as much info as I can put up here. Russell has been very easy to work with too.

Out of curiosity, why not have Steve Wong reprogram your chip for whatever gas you want to run?

How do you switch between the maps? I can't seem to find it on his site.

Just called Russell. Mine's on the way, too. I had ordered it just before he had the fire, so I've been waiting patiently!

That's not what my goal here is-that would be a step backward. I want to keep it programmed for high octane. The multi-map aspect of this new piece is what I'm after. For instance, if I were to fill up my 100/91 blend and headed north for a run through some hills or something, and needed to fill up for the drive home, and couldn't get to a station with 100, I could switch back to stock mapping and run 91.

A few weeks ago, all of the San Diego stations were out of VP100 for some reason, had to go down to a race shop and buy a 5 gallon can for $60 so I could take the car for a drive. I try and keep 100 on hand, but I was out at the time.

95% of the time I'll run the aggressive mapping, I just want a fall back position for emergencies.

There is an external pushbutton switch with 0-7 numbers to access any of the up to 8 programs onboard.

Ed,

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but I'm wondering why you bother to mix your fuel.
Why wouldn't you just run the 100 knowing that you had more safety margin?

Hmmmm......let me think. Because 100 is typically over $8/gallon here, and usually $8.99?

I know of one place North of the LA area that is about $6.50-7/gallon. There is nothing wrong with mixing fuel. You can indeed average out octane ratings. My chip currently is burned for 93. A 3:1 ratio gets me over 93. My safety factor is that I always am conservative when I estimate how much fuel I'll need to fill based on the miles on the trip odometer, so I probably end up at a 1:2 or 1:2.5 ratio typically.

My only issue is whether 100 is available or not. If it isn't, then straight 100 or a blend is a moot point-she stays in the garage.

Ed-

Cool! Keep us updated please. I'd like to hear your feedback on the "flexible" setup.

I have the SW chip for the '89 w/cat bypass and 91oct. I considered the 93, but after talking with Steve, I wanted to avoid the headaches you discuss above. You can easily find 93 here in VA and sometimes 94. I have yet to see 100 anywhere. Some have 91 only. I just don't trust the integrity of the 93/94 ratings at most stations over time.

It will take a lot of positive feedback for me to switch as I am happy with the SW set up, but eager to hear.

I ran the SW chip for years in Texas, where 93 octane is at virtually every station, with no issues. If the car was one that I drove on long road trips to states that may not have 93, it would have been a problem. This multichip would overcome that scenario...
