Default Project Porsche 911T...

Hey all!

Always wanted a "fixer upper" Porsche from the early 1970's. Got one just last week. Had been sitting in a storage lot since 1990 when the owner passed away. His son parked it and walked away.

Just getting to find out about all the goodies under the hood (who knew they came with mice....).

Out here in Parker Colorado, and looking forward to meeting like minded Porsche fans. Missed the Keystone Rally, but maybe we will make it up in the next 3 years or so...

Best,
Bill

1970 911T (its a Karmann, whatever that is...)

Welcome to rennlist- early 911 registry may be helpful if you're new to Porsches... and yes mice love old P cars that have been sitting for a while. I found a whole family pretty well mummified in the glove box of a 914-6 I was restoring several years ago...

And so the great adventure begins.......................

What are your plans for it? Stock restoration or hot rod with upgrades?

Welcome Bill,

Boy, you know how to have fun, don't you!!

Best luck,

Phil

ps. Karmann is the body manufacturer. They were a Porsche subcontractor back in the day.
Reutter was another body builder for Porsche.

Great project, another early 911 saved from the grave.

Bummer Karmann went out of business a few weeks ago

Well, my plan is to restore it to stock, and have a few surprise items under the deck. It was originally burgundy, and will be again.

Changed the oil / filter, added fuel cleaner, installed one of the two batteries, and it actually turned over and tried to start. Unfortunately, it looks like the carbs are stuck, as I cant open them at all. The linkage all works up to the carbs, but then no luck. I was hoping to find a secret that I could pour into them to clean them out...

All the glass is there. I took out the back and front since the rubber was gone. Need to find a driver door vent window to make it weatherproof again.

My plan:

1. Rust mitigation
2. Get her running
3. Get her mechanically sound (brakes, etc)
4. body work
5. Interior
6. Paint
7. Then start adding options to make it purr...

I am off to Europe with my family in two weeks, and will plan on stopping by the new Porsche museum in Stuttgart (next to the plant).

Thanks for the warm welcome all!

Bill

p.s. Any good used parts sites on the internet? lol

Wow GothingNC.... I feel a bit better about the price I paid for this one now!

Hey RollingArt, are the Karmanns a bit more "rare"? I heard a rumor that they were...

Welcome!

You have definitely picked a car worthy of saving. Having said that, you will most likely spend much more money and time on it then you expect. There will be times when you will wonder why you didn’t buy a car needing less work. But hey, that’s OK, that’s what this car hobby is all about!

Being an early car, and seeing that there is a fair amount of visible “surface” rust, it would probably be best to make a very detailed investigation on the real “rust status” of the car. So often there is more than what you first see. Use a screw driver or such as a probe and check areas such as the sills, floor pan, suspension pan, deep recesses of fenders etc. Rust can be a real heartbreaker at first, but happily, there are extensive sheet metal replacement panels and repair pieces from outfits such as Stoddards. It is best to find this out right away and do this work first. A sound body is the foundation for a good car.

Here is one particular thread (from Pelican) where a gentleman started with an early car that seemed “not too bad” in the rust department and then turned out much worse. However, everything was repaired very well and there are a lot of great photos in this thread.

Hopefully your car is much less involved in this regard, but better to know now rather than getting a nice paint job and then realizing later you inner sills are corroding from the inside or some such thing…

Too bad, but I wouldn't have tackled that either.
