Default Question on VDO clock

The clock has stopped working on my 86 911. I took the clock out and when I turn the lights on, the bulb for the clock also doesn't light. Is this a clock issue or possibly a wiring issue? how do I tell? I should mention that I also pulled the light out of the clock and the light didn't work that way either.

Does the light look burnt out? Have you tried using a known working light in there? Have you busted out the multimeter to check for voltage both for the light and for the clock? This is where I would start.

I don't have an extra bulb, but the light does have black on the tip so it could be burnt.

How do I check for voltage, just touch one lead to a ground and the other to the terminal for the light/clock?

My clock stops working below 50 degrees. That way I know when it's cold out. As if driving with my top off and no heat all the time didn't give me a hint.

I think the interior lights and front trunk light are on the same circuit. So if the interior lights work, you don't have a short. I'd try a circuit tester or a multimeter on the clock wire. I think the light might be part of the gauge illumination, which may be a separate circuit.

Funny thing...my clock did the same thing. I bought a used one and works great. I did a search and could not find anything on this subject.

The clock stopped last year on mine. I bought a brand new clock and she works great. As far ar the light not working..the bulb has to be grounded in the socket of the clock for it to work. At the time you may want to put a new bulb in anyway..but that metal casing has to be inserted into the back of the clock or it wont work.

e-bay, usually one or several on at any given time, 20-50 bucks.

I have one I think I paid like $65 for, as a spare. I can take a pic if you like. PM me here or email fhurderjr @ *** dot net.

I found one from a guy from my local PCA. It's from a C2, says they are bullet proof compared to the VDO's on the 68-89s. $60. Just needs a slight mod with the connection.

The clock on my '88 stopped working about a year ago. Similar, no clock, no light. I pulled the clock and sent it to North Hollywood Speedometer. ( I wanted to keep all the original parts). They sent it back in a week, and I reinstalled, adding a new light. Total cost, plus shipping, about 100 bucks.
