Default Is there an engine cover with the retractable wing that will fit my '77?

Okay, I've been running an overly wide turbo wing on my '77 for too long.

Now I realize that what I need is a 996 retractable wing, but that I want to set it up in a fixed position to hold my intercooler.

Does anyone know of a 911 lid with a retractable wing that will bolt to my '77?

You replace the whole decklid. A 993, 996 or 996 decklid/wing will not work. A 964 lid will fit with some small modifications to the hinges (they literally can be bent, if you want to keep it simple).

You can wire a window switch and a load-sensing circuit (the kind that controls power windows) to manually raise and lower it. I have not seen anyone come up with a way to make it speed-sensing, like the later cars have.

A 964 lid sounds like a great solution.

Now to find one and have it painted to match...

Thanks!

I had a 964 decklid on my 73 with RS/SC/Carrera flares, and also on my widebody 72. In the end, I chucked it in favor of the much lighter and much simpler ducktail. The retractable lids work better on the post-1989 cars because those cars have much better aero overall. On a pre-1990 car, the retractable lid is probably about as effective as a ducktail.

I'll grant you, it is fun to raise it up at a stoplight or when you're about to hit it.

But it's also really heavy.

The part that sticks out in my mind is that he wants the folding wing to stay in the up position all the time, unless I'm reading that wrong.

I didn't read the first post carefully enough. I doubt that a decklid with a retracting wing will work for this application, even if it's always in the extended position. There's slightly less room underneath the decklids with retracting wings than there is under a stock flat decklid.

You can fit some intercoolers under a ducktail. But I'd suggest you work out your needs carefully, then either choose a tail that will allow what you want, or build an intercooler to fit a particular space.

Laugha, I think you are looking at fixed tails. I think your setup flows air well, and you don't want to compromise that.

I also have this beautiful silver wing that isn't quite as wide as the black turbo tail I set it on.

Hmm... maybe this is the way to go?

If so, color-match the yellow or simply flat black?

Function is more important than appearance to me, but I don't want to hurt the Porsche image out there.

In your shoes, I would sell both of those tails, since neither is proportionately sized to your 911.

Then use the proceeds to get a ducktail or a Carrera tail.

Here's an intercooler under a duck.

A Carrera tail would be more period correct for your car. I prefer the look of the duck.

And while I'm expressing opinions, I'd definitely stick with body color for both the decklid and the tail.

Thanks for sharing your experienced opinions. I'll let you know what evolves.

I truly hope for something bigger than a duck tail but not as wide as a turbo tail, which I why I thought an altered 964 wing would do the trick. However, I have lost track of the 964 wing I bought a few years back.

Now would be a good time to find a 964 lid with a broken motor to create a mockup and see if an efficient intercooler can be fabbed and ample airflow can be achieved.

Any parts sources would be appreciated near the Nashville area. Shipping costs could easily exceed the value of such parts.

Raising and lowering a 964 tail has no impact on the amount of space underneath the decklid. The retracting part sits on top of the vent.

Laugha, the Ruf CTR used a Carrera tail. There were actually several revisions to it. I don't have time right now to look it up. Also, there is a recent thread about Porsche tail that you should look for. I wonder if you can run a Carrera rubber trim piece with a Turbo base?

Laugha use a ducktail on that car. Everything else doesn't look right. When you use non period correct parts..things just look way wrong and you start looking like your "pimping" the car.
