Post classic insurance: what's up with this stuff?

I just ran a search online and found a company that will insure an SC for about 300 bucks a year and allows you to put on 5000 miles per year.

Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Seem like a great option.

Yup.
A number of companies offer this and they usually have some restrictions that vary. I have my 73 on classic with agreed value. Have to keep it garaged and must have a seperate daily driver. But rates are DIRT cheap!!
try;

Hagerty
Leland-West
Grundy, ect

one of them offers discounts if your in PCA

Yeah, it's great! I have Tri-State of Minnesota (I live in Colorado...). My 73S is less than $200/yr for 2.5k miles/yr or $300 for 5k/yr and my record is far from spotless...

My car '84 is insured for less than $400 per year and I get 2500 miles. I needed to provide photos of all sides, the interior and the engine. And I'm pretty sure being garaged was required for my policy, though they did not require a picture of it. Another company I had called did request a picture of where the car would be stored. Your best bet is to call a few places.

I am currently in the process of applying for insurance for my '87 911 Cabrio with LelandWest. It is quite involved but offers significant savings if you qualify. They do require a locked garage w/photo, full list of drivers with documentation regarding violations and accidents as well as photos (4) of the car, PCA membership and a few other minor things. Based on my current insurance I am left to wonder if the couple hundred saved is worth the effort/restrictions?? Check around, I did, and hopefully you will find a company to assist you in your endeavor. Dave

ditto for American Classic Insurance company in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I currently insure my 84 Carrara with them for $250 a year. We are covered with the agreed value of $16K (I paid $12K), limited to 2500 miles a year. The car must be garaged@home and serve as the "extra" car. This suits me fine as I commute via train every day, we put on 2100 miles since we bought it in April. Unlike other insurers, driving in not limited to "shows", you can actually use the car to cruise (maybe even AutoX).

Never made a claim.

I had a similar policy with JC Whittney, covering a $9,000 1968 912 for a whopping $77 a year.

It runs me $800/year to insure (liability only) a crappy old 89 Jeep, go figure...

No garage? Lie, take a picture in front of a neighbor's or parent's garage and they will never know.....(unless you make a claim if/when the car is stolen from the curbside, yer screwed...)

Hi all,

I like the idea of the classic insurance. But my car is only 10 years old. So far, I have called about 5 companies and none of them will consider it unless it is 15 years or older. Or I have another very old car to go long with my '92 C2 Turbo.

Does anyone know of a company that will cover my? I only drive about 3k a year and it is garaged in a nice place. I also have 2 other cars.

Thanks,

Sonny

I like the idea of less expensive insurance but what are the limitations to driving? I like to periodicaly drive to work in my car (just for fun) and compete in AutoX. Are there any restrictictions (other than miles)I need to worry about?

I considered the Leland West route for my C2, but my daily driver Volvo 740 1990 was too old for them. Too many restrictions in terms of mileage. I have put 8k miles on my car since I purchased it in Feb. Went the Geico way and the C2 costs me $650/year inside the beltway of Baltimore.

I had Leland West for years and would always keep a copy of the mileage Doc they send you every year to make sure I didn't go over on the doc anyway. One year I couldn't find my copy and the miles I put down put me over the 5K allowed by two hundred miles and they bumped me. SO KEEP TRACK. I'm with my regular carrier now and it's only about another 100 a year and they haven't sent any mileage requests.

A web search of "collector car insurance" as opposed to "classic..." should find co.s that will insure a less-than 5 or 10 y/o P-car.
typical restrictions are as mentioned-
limited milage
garaged
the initial documentation, photos, etc etc is a bit of a PIA after that -
Other restrictions of my Ly West's policy include
no points / violations for ANY driver in the household apparently even those that do not drive the car! (they ask for a % usage for each driver)

no coverage for any on-track event including DEs (which I really find offensive since they advertise in pano and imply support to PCA)

car can only be used for pleasure - ie no occasional drive to work, no errands (technically).

There is also some silly thing in there about car must be garaged or under the owners survalince at all times even when on an over night trip!

in my case its saving me >$500/yr

The quality of the coverage only shows when you have to put in a claim.I always had classic insurance on my 71 911t and was a bit leary because it was so cheap( at the time $70/yr insured for $6500).I sold that car and brougt a 75 with a 3.0 and insured with JC Taylor. The first day I had the car on the road a freak fire destroyed the car.I had a check within a month for the full value of the car.The adjuster I dealt with was really nice and made a really heartbreaking experience much better.I recomend them highly. In my policy the milage is limited to 2500/yr,there has to be a seperate car for each driver in the house,it needs to be stored in a locked garage, you need to belong to PCA and if you have a teenager in the house they want a notarized document stating that she or he won't drive the car.
