Default Is it really time???

I have owned Porsches for awhile now and decided to sell my Guards Red/Cashmere interior 1989 911 Cabriolet. It is really outstanding. All original, I am the second owner, it was a California car until I bought it, and I have all the service records (including the original bill of sale) It just had it's 90K major service...always Porsche maintained, has no mechanical issues and looks fantastic. Worth a nice price as well. Why would anyone want to sell this car? God knows, I think I am in need of help and counselling.

I recently purchased a 1978 Rolls Royce (you can see I have car issues) which is a fantastic car in it's own right and the height of luxury. Beautiful car but no where near the fun of driving a 911. I keep driving both and just can't seem to get myself to let go. I tell my wife that I am selling the Porsche...and she responds "well if you intend to sell it don't you think you should tell someone it is for sale, list it in a classified ad or at least advertise it in some way" She is right of course and I respond I'll get to that soon. SOON has now turned into a few months

What it is with these car that hold us so much? Sure they are fun to drive, look great and give such a feeling of freedom but aren't they just sheet metal like all other cars. I keep thinking if I sell this one I'll never find another as good.

I'm sure I am not alone but could sure use come helpful advice. Keep both (not a likely solution with the cost/wife), sell the Rolls which can be an expensive toy to maintain, or just let go and remember all the good time we had together and move on in my life and enjoy the new luxury toy?

Others must have experienced the "been there..done that" experience and your council would be appreciated. Do others have similar feelings. Comments and advise welcomed.

Don't be in such a hurry. Feel it out for a while, and the answer will come to you.

Rolls are nice...but I always think of an "old fart" driving one. Stay young....if you have to stay with one, then stay with the Porsche. If you can...stay with both.
BTW...if you need more time, tell the honey that in this bad economy it is ill advised to sell the car and you need to wait till it improves. You can use us as expert references.

Given the choice of one car: Either a 911 or Rolls, the Rolls would come in about 10th place.

Dump the Rolls. I equate a RR with Gene Barry. In order to keep your edge in life there are two things that need to happen. Stay mad everyday at least two hours and drive a Porsche. Keeps the blood going.

I sold my beloved Z3 and bought a "practical" car. It was a disasterous and unhappy time for me. And I harken back to the motto of the Z3 crowd: Happiness isn't around the corner, it is the corner.

So, when you're in the corner, which helps you feel more happiness? The 911 or the Rolls?

Live in the moment.

I would say this group may be biased, just like if you went to a RR forum they will be biased too. The trick will be to find someone that has both or experienced going through the same scenario...Good Luck!

Just an interesting update. I posted the same question on the Rolls Royce Owners Club forum and got similar responses to this board........"Don't be in such a hurry, tell the wife you still haven't decided, etc."
Their reaction was "althought a Porsche is fun to drive it isn't a very practical car and equally expensive to maintain" Also volunteered was "with all the cars you have owned, why limit yourself to the experience of just one type of car" and "what's the big deal..sell both and buy something different e.g. an older
Ferrari, Masarati, Corvette, etc..they are fun to drive also" In net if you are not married to a particular brand why limit yourself and limit the fun. A guy with several Porsches on that forum answered that he is in the same position, owning too many cars and not enough time and money to play with all of them. His solution was pick the one you would most like to live with long term and sell all the other cars and learn to be content with that. No bad advise really. When I get to the final decision I'll post. My father had a great expression...."Only a man who has options gets frustrated"

man ... don't let my wife read this. she will believe it is the source of my issues. she took early retirement almost 5 years ago and has fogotten how much stress working full time creates, along with the deduction from any personal time due to the extensive 'honey do' list.

and so it goes.

Please, walk this way... lay down on the couch and tell me about your childhood. And how long have you been thinking this way??

OMG I wish I was in your shoes. Like others the Rolls is a nice car but unless you have a butler driving it for you, keep the Porsche or, something that keeps you young.

Well this is an update and a last message for awhile on this Forum. Someone contacted me through my Porsche service shop and pursued me to sell him my 911 Cabriolet. I was really hesistant but he offered probably me a very good price and made the transaction very easy. I was really reluctant and had about decided to keep both cars for awhile (in spite of the wife's view) and then eventually sell the Rolls Royce and keep the 911. Now that decision is made and I'll have to look for another Carrera
in the Fall. I might move up to a later year but truly love that 3.2 '84-'89 period Oh well, so long for a bit, hope to rejoin when I find another beauty. Thanks for all the help and advice over the past years
Regards Don
