Default What is the right size door speaker for an '88 911?

I replaced my door panels last year and elected to leave out the speakers. I've now changed my mind and want to install the door speakers. But what size? The cutouts in the door panel are 4.5" while the hole in the door sheet metal is about 5.25". So what size speakers fit? If 5.5', I assume I have to enlarge the hole in the door panel.

5.25" is a standard size, outside diameter. The smaller hole at 4.5" would be so that the grill would cover it.

I would be sure to install speaker shrouds as well. They are the bucket shaped things with a cutout at the bottom. They focus and direct the speaker sound outward, and make a huge difference. So, you have to plan for that as well. If you go with 6" you will have a larger assortment of choices. They should fit without too much trouble.

I just installed Focal 6.5" - I did have to enlarge the panel opening about 1/4" - love the sound of the larger speaker.

Ontario, the door hole is for the magnet. The speaker is screwed into the metal. You could easily fit a 5" magnet and coil in there.

I've been looking for these shrouds but have only found them at a local auto parts store. They were really thin and flexible, like Solo disposable cup so I passed on them. I looked on the Crutchfield site for something more substantial but can't find them. Anyone know an online source?

Hey, never mind, I found them on Crutchfield. I was using the wrong term. They are called speaker baffles on the Crutchfield site.

yes, those will do nicely. Another good benefit is that they will keep water off of your speakers.
