Actually some of that was funny .

The guys says you have to repair and upgrade the older cars all the time .... I am thinking that makes no sense, then he says he used to own 944s before going to his 996 .. Ah !!!!!

nice thread though.

I had a 996 (2004 Cab), got a good deal on it due to Porsche lease return via dealer auction friend. Had it a bit over a year. GREAT car but should have gotten instead an 84-89 since that is what I have wanted for years. IMHO, I like the interiors of the 84-89 better. 996 interiors are a bit cheap looking (plastic quality, etc.). Plus aircooled holds a special attraction.

Well I do agree there is a special atraction to the older ones .. I must have a lemon interior as the wires keep falling down from under the "no cover" dash, the steering wheel has lost it's colour and my cardboard door panels don't insulate very well

The older 911s are just built so well. Way less plastic. The guages look like something out of a military vehicle. The body panels are more solid than the ones on my 2008 2500 GMC pickup. You getta a lot of car for the buck with these babies.

Yes, the metal body panels on the aircooled Porsches are very thick. I went to the Castle Air Force museum on open cockpit day. I was struck at how the airplane gauges look like my Porsche gauges. But the red pointers are probably more visible than their white pointers. I am also impressed at the thickness of the original Porsche leather interior. My leather interior still looks new despite being, what 25 years old?

That's why I'm here with you guys. In all the various Porsches that I've owned in the last 22 years, my 996 was the most "soul-less". Great car, well made, 300hp, etc. Was a huge disappointment over my 993. Gotta get an SC or Carrera, even (gasp) a 964.

I couldn't resist posting a counterpoint to the OP's comments.

Saw recent magazine ad with an interior photo and I thought it was a Cadillac because of all the nice metal(?) accents.

I put it this way. I had a 996 and my gf at the time would drive it and she liked it. I didn't like the car as it was too boring and appliance like. It was very fast and very capable, but I preferred driving my 3.2 Carrera cab. She refused to drive that as it has no power steering/hydraulic clutch... That car was like Heaven to me!

I sold the 996 and replaced it with a 79 930. Chicks will not drive my old air cooled cars, but will drive the 996. 996+ = chick driveable car. air cooled 911 = nirvana. If I find a hot chick that likes to drive a 911/930, I'd marry her!

I totally agree on all counts. By the way, I read that thread and I was shocked at the contrast in attitudes and how they view Porsche cars. Someone who loves his GPS will not like a 356 Cabriolet, nor a 914-6, which are the other two Porsches that I have.

I did find a hot chick that likes my 911, and I have to say they are rare. But let her drive it, are you CRAZY?!

Well, I taught my wife how to drive stick, but I guess I might have t reconsider getting a car w/a 915 tranny, since I'd have to teach her all over again!

While I'm in no way an audiophile that needs a beaucoup expensive stereo system, I certainly would upgrade to a stereo that has mp3/usb/bluetooth/sd card, etc. to get music to it. But GPS? if I can't figure it out, I guess I don't need to get there
