Well, son back from college. Took a drive last night on a country road filled with oak trees. I showed him this thread and he thought it was really cool. Today, I let him drive the 280sl for the first time and realy got a kick out of it.
I would have let him drive it sooner...but he showed no interest till now.

Well, from another angle.... My dad bought a 67' 912 new in 1968. It was his daily driver for 20yrs, a garage ornament for another 8 and mine (since I restored it) for 14 yrs. I will NEVER sell that car, it is priceless. I've DE & auto-x the car regularly for all 14yrs since I have been responsible for it. My dad bought the pictures 83' SC when I was 14 and he still has that. I'm 35 now and I'm sure someday I'll assume that car as well. He's not big on maintenance so I'll have my work cut out for me when the time comes

My father purchased a 68 912 back in 71 or 72 and he still has that car today. It is truly a family member with tons of memories for all of us. Its been a thread in the fabric of our lives and is the reason I own a 911.

Great thread! My dad bought his '88 Carrera brand new. He and I have incredible memories with the car... weekend runs through the twisties, drives up to Long Beach for the GP, and best of all, lots of weekend afternoons just talking while I was detailing the car (and hoping to be rewarded with the chance to drive it afterward).

I bought the car from him about two years ago when it just didn't make any sense for him to keep it any longer. I will NEVER let it go unless its to one of my kids. At 130k miles its running and looking great!

Cool thread, but to late for me. I've sold all my "family members". An air cooled 911 is a special car in so many ways. I, too, grew up in a volkswagen family and the 911 is the only thing left that carries on that build quality found in the old german cars. Thats why when I shop for 911s, a '97 C4S and a '73S is synonamous in my mind. Just can't get that "click" when you close the doors anywhere else.

Sometimes you have to in order to get the next "better" one. I would like to have the '68 I started with in 1980. But after seeing some of the early stuff at the Porsche museum last weekend, time kinda marches on.

I never had the dad who was a gear head a car was nothing but transport to him. Somehow I became a gear head, as a kid I had the Mustang, and the Cuda, and the Convertible firebird....all clunkers but I had them (wish I had one of them now) anyway what I really desperately always wanted was a 911 had to have a whale tail and a front spoiler and be red!!!! needless to say it took 25 years (typical family work life etc.) but I finally got my red 911. I searched a long time and 5 years ago we got it, my son was 10 he came with me to get it and to this day still talks about that day! Funny, as has been said already how little things bring back the memories that make us who we are! We vowed that day we would never sell it!!

2 weeks ago I got furloughed (as a pilot things don't look so good right now for new employment) and wife and I were really talking about selling the baby, did not quite understand why my son was so bummed about it until this thread...... never experiencing things like everyone has spoken about as a kid it never dawned on me that to my boy my dream as a kid had become a part of his life experience and he just loved that part of his life with dad and our toy! Boy am I stupid!!!!

Thanks Abe, I am sure the family can find other ways to pay the bills! After all a vow is a vow!!!
