Who is the best engine rebuilder?
All right, I got little response to my other thread, so lets try this one. I am looking to swap/upgrade to a 3.2 in my 74 S. Anyone have recommendations around the Atlanta area? If I decided to stay with the 2.7 and have it done by the best, who would that be?

Well, for a mildly modified 2.7 there are several people throughout the country who can do a great job for you. Next question is budget- feel free to PM me if you dont want to post specifics.
Also, even if you dont actually build your own engine, I HIGHLY recommend you buy and read The 911 Performance Handbook so that when you talk to a shop about your expecations you are able to fully understand what they are telling you. The number of people out there who will sell you what you dont need or cant use is staggering.

The people I would trust most in the entire country is Steve at Rennsport Systems and Neil Harvey at performance developments.
Both those guys are going to tend to be expensive because they go the extra mile on everything, but they are to be trusted.....unlike a lot of shills that pay for advertising in porsche magazines and forums but do mediocre work or just plain don't care.
Russ Kelso in Arizona is another guy, lesser known but seems to be very reasonable in pricing and somebody who also genuinely puts the customer first. He would be the first person to tell you if he can do your project right.

I just got my 2.7 rebuilt by Franz Blam Racing in Tucker, I picked the car up 2 weeks ago. I would have to consider the shop one of the best in the metro Atlanta area and Mr. Blam & Deider are great to work with.

+10,000 on Steve Weiner! He is about to do some machine work on my 2.4L S motor. I would trust Steve with anything Porsche related.

Steve Weiner / Rennsport Systems draws from 30 years of racing and building 911 race cars.
He actually LISTENS to what you are telling him as far as what you are trying to accomplish, goals,
budget etc...and makes recommendations based on that info- rather than dictate what HE THINKS
YOU OUGHT to do. A rarity in any business. Honest and forthright, and a helluva nice guy to boot.
No shortcuts, attention to detail, and an incredible and sublime end product- at any level.
I wouldn't give up my car for anything, ....anything.

Well, I would hate for this to turn into another "Steve is the Man" thread, but...
Steve is the MAN!
As 911S3.6 points out, Steve's attention to detal is astounding. My own 3.6 (built by Steve), now two years and 10K miles old, is tight as a drum. It was built to run close to 300hp for the next 75-100K miles, and I have no doubt that it will (barring any stupidity from the driver ).
There are a couple of guys out there I would also consider (Blam's been around a long time, and Jerry Woods has a stellar reputation), but the bottom line, IMHO, is this is one of those times you WILL get what you pay for...
Good luck.

My personal favorite Porsche engine builder (other than myself!) is Peter Dawe. Its just my opinion of course, and he is expensive. There are others of course, like Drew Slaten, Sam S, etc. but Peter is the top man. Now, is he THE GUY for your hot-rod 2.7? Maybe, depends how much your willing to spend and what else he has going on at the moment.
Franz Blam is a great guy too, and theres another fellow in your area I cant think of offhand that does particularly good work. There is also Speedwerks up in North Carolina, and possibly Zitza (is he still doing customer work?) in Florida.
As I said, it was a loaded question.
