Spring projects: engine swap - Finished, with new pics
Just a couple teaser pictures from the shop this week. My car is a torsion bar chassis, and it used to be powered by a stock 964 3.6. I am upgrading to a worked 964 engine, with knife edged crankshaft, pauter rods, 3.8 RSR cams and heads. I will post more pictures and info as I move forward. I am least looking forward to wiring up the gauges to the Autronic engine management...

Thanks for the compliments... I didn't build this engine, rather bought it with low time from someone who had Renegade Hybrids replace their engine with a 650 horse Chevy engine. I was going to warm up my stock 3.6, but all told the parts were going to cost more than I paid for this engine turn key. This way I get to keep my stock engine for "free" and bolt it into my 914 (which I bought immediately after the new engine). Unless I can get this thing to run on a 50-50 (or leaner) mix of race fuel and 94 pump gas, I will probably have to change the pistons in the next year or so. At that point I will have to decide if I'm going to stay NA, or change the cams and get down to 9:1 compression or so for some forced induction fun! I'm still hopefull that I can take some ignition timing out for the street and make the cost per mile not seem so bad.
All the engines I have ever built have been for street cars, and I have always ended up wishing I had gone just a little more radical.... I'm confident that I've figured out how to buck the trend this time.

I run those pistons and Cams in my 993 Cup car... Good luck on the street... I would look for a stock Varrioram or earlier set up... The car is very hard to get rolling, only rewards you in the high RPM levels.. The thump and lump of the cam sound great however..
Good luck, great project.

Joe, What compression ratio are your pistons? These are JE pistons, and they are supposed to be 12:1. The factory compression ratio for the 964 bottom end was 11:1, even though I have heard they cc out closer to 10.4:1 in actuality. 12 isn't too much higher, and the cam has about 6 degrees more overlap than factory. I have not done the calculations, but I don't think the dynamic compression ratio will be that much higher than factory. I am really looking forward to a nasty idle! I went with B&B headers / heat, and a flowmaster setup, so hopefully it should sound right.

I wanted to post an update... I finally have the engine installed and running. I've been pretty side tracked with other work related things, otherwise I would have liked to have the car on the road by now. I had to spend about an hour last night learning how to wire it all up, and after some quick trouble shooting it came to life. I'll post a couple more pictures for now and a link to a shor video. The video quality is pretty bad, and I intend to make a new one eventually.
Joe, I was really surprised how smooth it idles! Maybe I'm too seasoned to lumpy engines... I can tell its going to be different to drive though, because it seems to run pretty "ratty" from about 1-2.5k.
I still have a bunch of wiring and clean up to do, but hopefully I'll be out on the road soon!
Special thanks to rennlisters RT930turbo & hockeydude for assistance getting this project off the ground

What are those stickers above the bumper but below the engine lid? It looks like some weird serial number plate. You can see it in this pic. I've never seen those on any other 964. Was your car in a race fleet maybe?
