I have an '86 911 Targa and does not have the interior temperature sensor on the dash (but has heater control between seats) nor a Central Locking System. Were these options for 1986?

mm:
Both of the items you listed were options for 1986. My '86 Carrera did not have these options either.
From my '86 US Factory brochure, Automatic Heating Control and Electric Door - Locking System are listed as options (along with many other items).
My heating controls (considered Manual Heating Control) consisted of the two levers between the seats to control heat fans along with the three position switch/**** for the additional heating fan.
Hope this helps!

I agree with Jim. My manual heating was easy to use and blasted heat whenever needed. Both levers up with fan on 3 and there was a lot goin' on! My brother has the automatic heat and that system doesn't seem to push as much air as the manual heat did in my car.

My '87 has no auto door locks or climate control, cruise only. Everything works, I'm glad it is a "low option" example. IMHO, the older the car, lower O&M costs, better systems reliability (a bit lighter, too) if it isn't made complesx w/ options.

Rich:
Here's a condensed version of what those dash levers do:
Top left - small black lever: Controls the amount of fresh air taken into the car from the vent found on the top of the hood/under the windshield
Top Right - small black lever: 3 position fan switch that controls the flow of fresh air (not heat) into the cabin.
Large Red Lever: Directs only heat to either the floor/foot position or the windshield defrost vents. Heat will also come out of the two side dash vents.
Large Black Lever: Directs only fresh air to the floor or windshield.
The ***** and / or lever(s) between the seats control how much hot air will be allow forward from the engine into the passenger compartment. The higher the **** is turned, the more heat will be allowed forward. Same with the levers. As you pull the lever up, more heat will come forward.
Automatic heat has one **** between the seats with 10 positions to control fan speed. Manual heating usually consists of one or two levers and, depending on the year, also a three position switch which turns on an additional fan to push more heat forward than just the engine compartment fan.
Hope this helps,
