Talking Help!!

Okay - really really new to Porsche.
Just bought a 1980 911SC (car of my dreams since I was about 5!) and it didnt come with a user manual or anything and Im now tired of searching the net....
What do the dashboard dials mean? I have established that "OEL" means oil in german - but what is the guage on the first dial (the one with the fuel guage) for?
Thank you

Gauges left to right:

fuel level

oil tank level - mine is between midway and 3/4 indication when hot. Engine has a dry sump, meaning no traditional oil pan like most vehicles. You must check the car oil level when the car is warm, running at idle and on level ground. The oil tank is on the right side of the car, you'll see a cap and the oil filter. Don't drop the dipstick into the tank. Proper oil level is midway between the two marks on the dipstick.

engine temp

oil pressure - my gauge reads in bar. 1 bar = ~14.5 psi. Pressure should increase 1 bar per 1k rpm. Mine sits below 1 when the car is at hot idle.

tachometer

speedometer

clock

If there's anything I've missed, feel free to correct me.

Check Pelican Parts forums for serious 911 discussion, kinda slow here.

Don't forget, the oil dip stick is in the oil fill tube and the oil is checked with the engine running after it warms up. Don't look for the radiator nor where to add coolent..it doesn't exist. You will not find the water temperature gauge either.
Not making fun of you....this happened to me when I first bought the car. It took me a few hours to remind myself it was an air cooled engine.

No kidding!! With my first 911, do you know how long it took me to figure out how to open the gas lid!!!? I looked like an idiot in the gas station reaching out for the owners manual to figure that one out.

How do you open the gas lid?? I'm a newbee doing my due diligence and I just realized I have no idea where the gas lid release is located. I did figure out how to open the engine lid when I drove my first 911 (88 targa) as a a possible purchase. Pete Z's book has been a wonderful road map in this whole process. Thanks.

Well, congrats. Also, suffice it to say you're gonna have a lot more questions, so the good news is you found Rennlist. Lots of info (& opinions) here. But, just because "you read it on the internet" doesn't mean it's factual, and you will have to decipher some of the answers to questions you'll have.

You've picked a great car, like the rest of us have-enjoy it.

You may want to put some info on the car on your signature for when you have questions. If you have a problem, sometimes it is model-specific on the proper solution.

And, you need to post the required pics of your car!

Welcome to Rennlist! I had the same trouble tring to find the dip stick when I got mine as it did not come with a manual either. Whenever you have questions, it is a safe assumption that they have been asked before so you can try doing a search to find your answer quickly.
