If it's for the 996, the answer is yes. I accidentally triggered it by putting the key in before I reconnected the seat belt sensor, but it reset when I disconnected the battery. Need to have the radio code handy though.
EDit - oops, I read 996, not 1996. On the 993, I'm not sure but you might as well try it - whats the worst that can happen? Of course, that's right up there with "here, hold my beer" when it comes to advice :-)

It won't hurt to try. Just don't loose your key remote programing! You should'nt have any problems. Do you have a good shop you could get the codes cleared? If its the 993, I think the Hammer will do it. Hopefully you can get it all cleared if the battery doesn't do it. 993's are a little stubborn with codes and programing.

typically it won't. I was being a bit dramatic - didn't come out right. But if the car retains it's key codes, the airbag codes are not much of a stretch. The SRS control unit is sensitive and will hold any little fault. The reasons are the obvious liabilities created when people are monkying around with the system. Also it keeps the dealers waiting rooms nicely occupied.
Next time, disconnect the battery when removing the airbags. Its not required, but is prudent procedure. Also, when you reach behind the airbag and remove the plug, touch the door striker with your hand to release any static in your clothing/body before touching the airbag. Nobody likes a 12 gauge shotgun shell going of in their face.
