Default Have you ever driven a new (pre-89) 911 ?

I was just 18 when I went out for a drive with a friend of mine who had a new 87 coupe, darkgreen with tan interior. I didn't get the chance to drive it myself but the impression it made on me back then was overwhelming. After two C4's I'm now driving the car that really made my head spin.

I was way too young back then. Would have been interesting to see if the AC worked in those cars when new.

The closest I've come is owning a 83 SC with 40K miles.

An 86 popped up in town a year ago with 8k miles on it. I had been stored for years, flat tires and so on. Just sat in that one.

Y'all are pups, I remember when the 356 SC was new. Rode in my first NEW 911 in 1967. Red 911S and it screamed.

In 1989 (when I was 19) I worked at a Porsche dealership for the summer and got to do many customer pick-ups and deliveries in then-new Porsches. That was a great summer but then real life kicked in and I had to start buying my own Porsches.

I started selling cars at a Porsche+Audi dealership in May 1988, so got to drive alot of new Porsches on demo drives, but the best was on my 30th birthday when i took a new Granite Green Carrera coupe on a lovely drive to Lake Pepin with Jane (you are a good sport). Most of the day/evening is a blur, but I know at least a couple of champagne corks were launched out the sunroof at speed and there was alot of manipulation of shift *****...

Ahh, I love 911's.

My brother gave me a ride in his new Tobacco Brown 77 Targa when I was in Jr. HS.

I drove an 83SC with only 4,000 and something miles. But only for 4 miles. I could see the value diminish as I went.

It was no tighter than my own with only 62k miles.

My neighbor had a 77 Porsche coupe and needed my truck to pick-up his relatives at the airport so we traded cars for the day. I almost killed myself as I took a turn at around 50 and braked. I fishtailed, over steered but recovered only because I turned into a one way street and had plenty of space. I had no idea how fast I was going because the speed on the speedo was so condensed. The needle was in the same spot as if I was going 30 in the truck. Of course, I never told him!

I drove a new Carrera in 1986 at at dealer...I was 31 then. Not a kid but still young enough to make an impression.

I still remember seeing new '66 and '67 911's on the road when I lived near Milwaukee in those years. I was 11-12 years old and was jusy starting to get interested in cars. For some reason I was always much more interested in the European cars even then.

Always wanted a 911 and here I finally got mine (1989 Carrera 3.2 SA) two years ago!

Forgot to add to the above posting...the first Porsche I ever drove was a new 1978 928 that a well off friend bought then. I was just 23 then. Thought that was a cool car but it never fully interested me like the 911's even though it was another 8 years before driving my first 911.

My first 911 was a (yes I was spoiled sort of) high school grad present from my Grand mother. That was 1968, the car was a 1967 911S, she was very mater of fact that I was not getting the bigger 912. Sweet heart didn't have a clue then. Drove it till it was taken from a parking lot in SF, never to be seen again. (three months of owner ship). Next 911S was a mustering out present (I payed for it with combat pay) in 1971. Can't even guess how many miles I put on it, but it was used for every thing from SCCA road racing, to Ski car (my first three years living here in Tahoe) Sold to my cuz who keep it for over 25 years. Next was a 1973 911T, that my new wife and I bought when all we intended to do that day was go to the movies in Reno. For some reason this Red Coupe just caught our attention as we past the Porsche dealer. Left home in a Blazer, came home in a Porsche. That car went thru many changes during it's time with us. Daily driver year round, then it was moding started with first a set of Carrera RS flares and Duck tail, then I came across a new 1978 3.0 SC motor. That was installed by me in the bay of the FD were I worked, then after a couple of years it went thru a complete redo to RS spec every thing. 2.7 twin Mach injected motor, side scrip, 7/8 gold center 15" wheels every thing. Sold about a year later 1980 to a guy from Fresno. Next was a custom built 1974 911S Targa, Chiffon white, bug eye hood mounted driving lights, ridged painted body color roof panel, Recaro seats. The motor I built; 2.8 CSI S spec cams all balanced (by Lukes an Shorman in El Cerrito). This car was meant for Traveling, and it to was a year round driver here in snow country. it was sold to a guy in Fremont CA and never seen again. They were all great drivers, with their period problems, Cam chain tensioners, backfire cracked air boxes, leaking oil return tubes, cooked batteries when diode would take a dump in the alternator, and I always carried a spare CDI box. What great cars, I haven't had a Porsche since, but the bug has been eating at me to get back to my roots.

Mark.
