Post Sun Visors need a diet

Okay, what do I do about these lousy, puffy sun visors? They are quite the thing. 1982SC, Black on Black.

Don't laugh but I read in a much earlier post that someone cut a SMALL slit in the rear of the visor. They then injected that foam you use to seal cracks (Great Stuff) then they placed the visor between two boards with a weight on them. Said they came out good. Mine are like yours I just haven't had the nerve to try the above cure.

Hi,

Yes - the original foam breaks down to "dust" after many years of use.. I've also read about the same fix Ernie talks about - especially among 914 owners and early 911 owners... Haven't tried it either, but I heard it works..??!!!

Are there any suppliers of replacement vinyl ones? Or leather?

Great Post, my sunvisors have also grown to a balloon-like size, at least to the point where they are annoying. Great tip with the foam. This site is great.

I also have a 1982 SC, and I have a chocolate brown dashboard and surrounding trim (including my sunvisors), although the seats, door panels, carpet etc. are saddle. Exterior is chiffon

I'm thinking of dyeing the brown pieces to black.

I'd like opinions on the wisdom of doing this, and also need feedback on leatherique vs. the color plus dyes.

Thanks!

My sunvisors are on top of the garage fridge. I replaced them with lightweight sunglasses...

I tried the "Great Stuff Foam" fix. I would not recommend it. The visors came out lumpy even though I clamped them between 2 boards in my vise. I had plenty of pressure to squeeze them flat but they ended up looking like...I cut little holes and filled them with Great Stuff, not like new sun visors.

I just got mad at mine and pulled them out. I sit tall in the seat at 6'2' and they just were in my way. I might just try a window valance.

I have also tried the foam in my 83SC, if you do it right it will work and look pretty good for about 6 or 8 months, then it turns to mush and you have to redo it.The more you redo it the worse it gets. I ordered the replica visors for Performance.Look great ! I consider visors to be saftey equiptment, so I want ones that do the job, and look good as well.I have a Targa and I have the top off most of the time so the visors are very visable.
