I have a 996 with 70k miles, my first Boxster, a 97, I sold with 108k miles, and the 2001 Boxster S I have now has 50k miles. I've had no engine problems and no oil leaks with any of them. During the time I've owned all 3 of those M96 engined cars, my 968 cab has cost me 5k to 6k dollars in unexpected repairs. There is no more wrong with the newer cars than any of the other models over the years. SCs had tensioners issues, 993s had top end issues, etc etc. You can come up with model specific problems with every different porsche. It doesn't mean that a majority of examplesl experience the problems. Just the opposite, a small portion of cars have issues that get talked about a lot. There are a lot more stories about 986/996s because Porsche made so many more of them. They aren't as rare as older models, hence the depreciation. As a result, you can buy a very nice example of one of the best cars ever built for the price of a new Maxima.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think I'll keep looking at the Boxster I've identified. I like everything about the car. Any thoughts on headroom in a Boxster vs. my '89 911? I'm 6'3 and height hasn't been an issue in my 911. Just curious, since I've never test driven a Boxster, yet.

I see your are in Atlanta burbs. I am in Lawrenceville. Your are welcome to come by. I have 996, Boxster, 968, and a 911 SC. You are welcome to try them out side by side or drive them around for a bit. None are actually for sale, just offering to let you compare the various models. I'm short, so head room isn't a problem for me. The 996 is a unbelievable, but the Boxster is more fun mile after mile, IMHO. PM me if you want to take me up on the offer. Since the time has changedit would need to be a weekend

Very nice of you to offer. I'm trying to figure out how to get to Tampa and test drive the '00 Boxster S. I have plenty of business reasons to be in Tampa, but I'm having trouble finding dates that work right now. I would assume that headroom on the Boxster is similar to my 911, but assumptions can sometimes get you in trouble. I'll let you know. Thanks, Kevin

You may have more issues with legroom than headroom, especially once the roof it down. I found that the wall behind the seat was at times limiting and I'm only 6'0 tall.. comes down to how you sit. Also, mine had sport seats which were a bit "snug" for my robust physique

Look up Carmax or a local dealer.. you don't have to buy it, but you can go test drive a few "local" ones, no?

It's probably a good idea to go drive a local one. I do drive with the seat fairly far back, but my 911 allows you to get even further back. That wall could be an issue on the Boxster.

Get a 968, I think it was made for people 6'3" and over. I have to pull the seat forward way too far to depress the clutch completely and I'm 5'9" The market for 968s is really soft, and they are great cars. I saw a 95 cab with 50k miles for 17 last weekend. They have about the same power as 986S, and you rarely ever see one going down the road.
