911 3.2 G50 or 993

Am new to Porsches with very little experience. I have Peter Zimmermann's book. Why would a person, looking for an extremely fun car to drive (not a daily driver), buy a 911 3.2 G50 over a 993?

Two reasons I can think of:
1. Looks - the 3.2 G50 has vintage looks, the 993 has more modern looks. Some prefer the vintage look and simplicity of the design.
2. Price - the 993's command a price premium over 3.2's, as they should, since they are newer, more complicated cars.

I would also add feel. The 3.2 is a lot more raw than the 993. It's also louder, and less refined, more 'old school' so to speak. It depends on your preference.

If you're not looking for a daily driver and want a fun weekend toy that has comparatively lower repair bills (and lower price entry point), the 3.2 is the way to go.

'89 was my cut off when I was looking. I wouldn't have given $5.00 for a 964. I wouldn't even look at the 993's. Wife liked 'em, but it was vintage that I was after. I wanted a car that came of age the same year I did.
Do not count out the SC. Something about the guys that hang out here with the 3.0's make me think that is also a great car.

By the words: better feel, less refined, more raw do you mean that the driving is more in tune with the road which would include a better in hand steering feel and the 911 is a more involving drive than the 993? I drive a 993 the other day and thought the steering was somewhat artificial in that the steering appeared too heavy at 10 MPH and at 50 MPH and seemed kind of numb-like. In a way, maybe the 993 steered like a truck. Is the 214 horsepower enough for a fun ride? The 993 had good acceleration once the RPMs got up a bit.

I took a very good looking but never cared for old man's cab that was a slug and turned it into a neck snapping, eye watering, sex machine with little more than a cat bypass, chip, plugs, wires, distributor cap, bla bla bla, octane and some good shocks. It is so raw that it's a good thing it was in trade for getting fixed or I would be in trouble every time I drive her.

ps: I'd also like to have a 993 "now" (in addition to my 3.2) along with an SC, a longhood (pre-74)...well, get the picture? Nothing after the 993 even appeals to me although I'm sure they're great cars to add coolant too

993 has better air conditioner and faster 0-60 time. I choose the 911 because of the rawness and price however I do miss the airconditioner sometimes especially in SC. I also like the look of the 911 vs. the 993. But, I love the rearend of a 993 4s. Very Sweet! I think it has probably the best rearend.

full throttle and it sounder very gutteral. Just as loud as my 3.2. ![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
When I was shopping, I preferred the road feel of the 3.2. The extra power of the 993 was very intoxicating though.
If the 3.2 is indeed louder, what makes it louder? A less restrictive exhaust system? Were there mandated lower sounds limits?

Stock, I thought my 3.2 sounded pretty tame. A GHL muffler, Fabspeed premuffler, and an airbox mod and it now sounds fantastic imo (and others' too as I constantly get compliments). I'm sure the 993 has a MUCH better a/c than mine (I took it out
). Is it a "raw" sports car? I reckon so, but that's exactly what I was seeking.

The key thing for me is the non-power-steering in the 3.2. It gives the whole driving experience a much meatier feel and the wheel is alive compared to the 964 onwards.

Another vote for the 3.0 SC or 3.2 Carrera. Get the G-50 if you can but don't rule out the 915 cars.
I've had an 83 SC / 88 carrera and a 96 993. Of the bunch, my 88 was with me for 8 years, 7 more than the others. There are many variables to your dicision, not the least of which is what appeals to you most. You can look from a very analytical pov, which has more power, better suspension etc....etc.... and then there are the intangibles like feel, visceral experience etc... that part is up to you and you alone.
BTW - I know of a PERFECT 1988 triple black coupe (+ $$$) AND an 82 targa (- $$$) let me know where you are located and if your interested PM me!
Brgds, Peter
