I would expect to be happy with either car... The earlier 3.2/3.0 cars are a little more raw, but its not like the 993 is a plush luxo-boat either.

For me it would be decided on what I could afford. If I could buy a top-drawer 993, I think I would. However, I would prefer a really nice 3.2 over a marginal 993 if that were the choice I came to.

You (simply) need them both?

Best,

However, no valve adjustment with 993. I rebuilt the A/C on my 3.2 and it works great.
Yes, changing oil on the 993 does indeed suck, but there are worse things. Changing plugs isn't much fun either, but luckily, you don't need to do that too often, and frankly, it wasn't as tough as I'd been led to believe. Stick with a 95 993 and the SAI's and CEL is a non-issue.

BTW, the 964's seem to be one of the better values on the market right now. I suspect this will change over time as they become more appreciated (and start to appreciate).

I had an SC for a few years, tracked it, really learned to drive a 911 then made the switch to a 930, totally different experience there, just recently added a 964 to the stable, and while the bastard child of the 911 line up, they really are great cars if you find a good one, a combo of old and new, the smooth synchromesh gearbox is intoxicating and that 3.6 is a torque monster, I had a chance to buy a friends 993 but chose 964 as I prefer more classic lines but a little more modern for a daily driver. . .

I have a 964 and I really enjoy it. The Boxster and the 964 are the steal of the market right now, both are great cars. I think people choose the 3.2's because they are close to the original 911 as you can get. They kind of finicky little cars, but fun to drive and easier to maintain than some of the newer 911's. The 993 is a beautiful car and deserves all the attention it gets. I think the 993 is the car to buy in terms of looks, but that is me. Everyone has there own opinion. Drive all of the models and see which one you like.

Went through the same decision process myself (you can search some of my posts on Pelican about it) and went with an 87. No matter what, you need to DRIVE them both. Get involved in your local PCA chapter and go to some events. You will be surprised at how many people will offer to let you drive their car. I put out a post basically asking someone to let me drive their G50 Carrera and not only got to drive an 87 (at a VIR DE), but a 993 there as well.

I love my 87

I've owned two G50's, an '87 cab and my current '88 coupe. I've also spent a fair amount of time driving friends 993's and I'll take a 993 over my G50 any day. There's a defiinite torque advantage that's awesome, although I guess it could be different gearing. Whatever it is, it's great. I like the look of the 993 better than my G50's as well, and no valve adjustments on the 993. Someone mentioned a/c earlier, also goes to the 993.
