I saw this one for sale....what size engine is this? Is this a correct model offered in '73?
The ad says it has webers and track exhaust with 911/53 engine, electric sunroof, AC, rear bilstein sport shocks (new), factory ducktail, 5 spd, etc.
NO RUST is highlighted twice.
I'm a 911 virgin, but have always wanted an early...need advice from the pros please!
TIA.

Rick,
The 911/53 is the 2.4 litre S engine that such a car would have come with. Many of these were converted to Weber's after the MFI exhibited excessive wear. Hopefully, the owner retained all the MFI hardware as that integral to the value of the car.
The biggest concern is always rust as that can take a huge amount of money to repair properly. If you seriously consider this car, you MUST have an independent expert go over the car in close detail to make sure there are no such problems.

Rick,
The 73 S's are terrific cars, nice ones are a pretty penny these days. I would drive a few and make sure it's what you want. All the early 911's are terrific cars but they all have subtly different personalities. And as Steve says check for rust.

A couple of more comments- If car is a real S and it's been heaviliy modified it may lost quite a bit of it's value as an S. If it's been lightly modified it's probably worth taking car back to stock configuration. I own a 73 S and a hot rodded 73 RSR clone, they are completly different cars. Drive them both if you want a hot rod then the stock cars even the S's don't cut it IMHO.

is it a true r-gruppe car? just cause it has a few things on it doesnt make it an r-gruppe car, unless the owner is in r-gruppe (which not just anyone can join -its pretty exclisive and hoity toity, and they review every spec of the car to determine if its hot rod enough). alot of people throw duck tail or do other slight mods and claim its r-gruppe when its not. thats not to say anything bad about the car, but i have seen cars on ebay with people claiming they are rgruppe cars when they are not, and not of the same quality, just to boost the price.
have a link to the ad? i know alot of rgruppe cars from teh early 911s registry, i could probably recognize it. how much do they want for it? r-gruppe cars are not cheep, and are extremely expensive. teh guys who own them know what they can get for them, and demand top dollar.

Joe...yes it is. The lady emailed me, price is firm at $4700....she has financial issues and needs to sell ASAP. My guard is up here, from the comments posted above, and the "to good to be true price".
She claims it is an R-Gruppe car...with a factory ducktail....and she stresses NO RUST anywhere. It was resprayed in the light green colour 6 years ago.
I asked her to send me the VIN.
Guys...is there anything special in ther VIN of a R-Gruppe 911S?
What kind of HP in the 2.4 then?
Would the shift pattern be that 1st is where 2nd is on the 914s?

I'd be cautious, there is no way the car would go for $4700, perhaps $47,000.
R-Gruppe is a sort of club out of California and not a factory spec so you won't have a link to VIN numbers.
There is a thread on Pelican about this car ... From what I've read, run away; sounds like a scam.

Yep, my suspicions are right...f'in scammer. I got emailed by the seller that she wants to money sent to "kijiji" directly, they will hold it until the transaction is complete.
Yeah, right *******.
I emailed Kijiji direct and they confirmed it with me that they dont offer anything like this.
Now my next to-do is email the scammer and call them out.

Glad you did not get scammed. A couple of years ago I was looking at a 911 on ebay. I had email contact with the owner, Cali car, had to sell do to loss in the family BLAH, BLAH, BLAh, any way I won the bid, Car dissappears, contact ebay, they say was a scam and give they all info I have on seller and if I sent money. No money was sent. Just a lost hope on first 911. It sucks this as to happen.

Too funny. A looooooooong way since Cris Huergas and I were standing around between classes at the JC, College of Alameda, with our newly purchased, old 911's in 1980 talking about how we could hot rod them. I went nuts on my '68 within a year.
