1987 Speedometer Woes
The other day I was driving home and noticed my speedometer was displaying the correct speed but my odometer was not working at all. I know some will say this is a great way to keep a low mileage car but I want to know how far I have traveled. Both the odometer and trip odometer have stopped spinning. Is this something internal to the speedo? Can it be fixed and if so, where can I send it?
Thanks in advance,
George

This is a very common problem. A small gear in the speedo breaks. My advise, send it to North Hollywood Speedometer http://www.nhspeedometer.com/. Should be about a 1 week turnaround. Call them to check first. IIRC About $135 /w shipping. You can try to do it yourself, but sometimes it's just better to leave it to the pros. I found it much easier to remove the steering wheel first to get the speedo out.

I left this one to the pros......just couldn't stand the thought of damaging the bezel somehow (whether it's seen or not!!!) That removal tool does the job cleanly,..doesn't look like anyone's ever been in there!!!
NH speedo,...they'll take care of it easily....and with warranty!!

Three Wheelin'
They coverted from miles to km, converted the mileage on the odometer to km's, replaced the motherboard. (There was a cold soulder jumper on the motherboard that was causing issues and they had no idea what it was doing there in the first place), and I got a new face plate that goes to 300 km/h. I think the whole thing cost me $220.00.

palo alto speedo
Agreed with the previous posts about Palo Alto Speedo. I just had mine done a month or two back and i think it was about $135 to have the odometer gear replaced.

Speedometer fixed
Thanks to everyone who replied. I decided to give the speedometer repair a try since I like doing all of the work on my car and enjoy a challenge. The hardest part of the job was getting the case off of the speedometer. After that, the job was a piece of cake. Jeff at "Odometer Gears" went out of his way to get me the right gear. One added benifit of the fix was I was able to calibrate my speedometer to exactly 60 mph using a GPS. The speedometer has always been about 5 mph off. Now it is right on the money from 20 mph to at least 65 mph, not sure yet if it is accuate any faster. Once back together, there are no visible tell-tale signs any work was ever done. Only if you remove the speedometer can you tell and the bent metal case had to be opened by someone, might as well be me.

That "visual" of "fighting" the bezel is unsightlly, no? Thats' why I opted for NH repair, as they (obviously) hav the bezel removal tool to do it cleanly (yeap,..we can ALL pry it off, no?) Looks as if no one beens' there (FWIW)....AMAZING CLEANLINESS!!!
How did you "calibrate the speedo" using the GPS? (Adjustments?)
Curious? As I wany mine ( in the end) DEAD ON!!!!

Doyle

Speedomer Calibrate
The needle is just pressed back onto the speedometer shaft with a twisting motion. Once on the shaft, there are stops at 20 mph and 160 mph. On the road, I checked the speed with the speedometer vs the GPS and then corrected the speedometer by twisting the needle past either of the stops till both the speedometer and GPS read the same. So far they are both right on the money from 20-60 mph, above that I am not sure but if I am traveling faster than 60 mph, I have a different agenda! The carnidge to the rear of the bezel is so minor you would have to really be looking for it and would only see it if the speedometer was out of the dash. On a twenty year old car only a true concurs car would it matter.
