Default Rattle in 5th

Hi all,
I made a discovery this week that is troubling me.
It was the first time I drove the car with the windows up.
Without the wind noise, I heard what I thought at first was pre-detonation.
It sounds like a rattle whenever I am on the throttle.
I then discovered (quite happily) that if I load my shifter by pushing it forward the noise goes away. It seems it is my 5th gear that is rattling under acceleration. There is also a slight whine in 5th when I'm coasting.
I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar symptom.

cheers

i wonder if this is the "gear ratlle" so often talked about, which becomes more noticable when a spring centred clutch is installed over a rubber centred.

Well, it may very well be.
I have no idea if the clutch has ever been replaced.
At 75K I would expect not.
The real question is...... "Is it something to worry about?"

Somewhere on here is a tread about this. It is fixed by putting a large rubber band on the linkage.

search g50 rattle....

irobertson, the "o" ring does help, but make sure the cup on the shift lever is good and the sleeve on the shift rod ia also not worn. Those two items and the "O" ring should reduce or eliminate it. Also, make sure you don't lug the engine as that induces the problem. It did on my 88 Carrera. Any noise will telescope up that shift rod and terminate at the shift lever. Good luck.

Thanks guys for all your help and info.

The problem you are referring to, is it typically something that sounds like it is coming from the shifter area?

I do get a whine from the shifter when coasting in 5th.
I figured that this is just transferred vibration.
I also get the growl when creeping below 1200 RPM in 2nd gear.
I have never been one to lug along in low revs though. ;-)
The more I drive the toy, the more time I find myself floating around 3K.

The sound that I am concerned about is coming from the engine/tranny area of the car.
It sounds like pre-ignition, which is why I was initially quite stressed about it.
I then discovered that if I shove the shift lever firmly forward the noise stops.
If I load the shifter left to right it doesn't change.
It feels like I need to load the shift fork against the ring gear to get it to stop.

If these are the symptoms that match the problem you are describing, then great!!

I hope to get into the O ring fix later in the week, so I will see how that works out.

Thanks again guys.
Cheers

Irobertson,
Do yourself a favor and plan on replacing the plastic cup and probably most of the other plastic parts in the shifter. This is a common problem and fairly easy to deal with. The hardest part is getting the center console out.

Check here and on Pelican for lots of good threads.
