Wow, two of the best ever, you're a lucky guy Brian. Gold wheels or not, there is something special about the early cars, especially the RS. I was a Laguna Seca the same day that R-Gruppe stopped by. **Drool** Absolutely awesome bunch of cars. Seemed like a fun bunch of guys, too.

What is the maint. like on a 993 compared to say a 86 3.2 911 Carrera. Can most routine maint. be done by a DIY wrench. I do all the maint. on my '86 now. The price appeal on the 993s is becoming very attractive. May consider one myself. Thanks for input.

Jim, best to post that question on the 993 forum. There are several regular contributors that do all their own maintenance, also worth taking a look at Robin Sun's site www.p-car.com, which has a handy DIY section.

Thanks John,
I thought the same thing as soon as I posted!
Will head over there and do a bit of research.

I think I'm a contrarian. I had a Arena Red/Cashmere '97 993 it was a great car but I realized I wasn't driving it all that much because I wanted to keep the miles low and was afraid of dings etc. After coming to the realization that I was not getting as much fun out of the car as I could (and hearing the other half's complaints about same), I sold it, bought a Linen Grey Metallic/Black '89 Targa and a kitchen remodel. The Targa was a great car for driving - I felt more connected to the road and felt more free to drive it hard. A year or so later, I fell for the current Silver Metallic/Black cloth '88 Club Sport and really like it as a weekend driver/autox car! Faster and noisier but a blast to drive (who needs a radio)! But now I am back to being careful where I park it! Bottom line - determine what you will use the car for and drive what you get the most enjoyment out of. Realistically though - maintenance on a 911 is a lot less than a 993 since you can do much of it yourself.

I also prefer 80's 911's. For me, a G50 car is as civilized as I like to go. But that is just me and I find the 993 a great car. As far as the feel of more power, my friends and I have noticed that stock 911's of different generations tend to lap very close at the track, even though they might feel different. I love the 993 like all 911's that have wipers that park on the driver's side of the windshield. You can't fault the last 911. Refinement with a 911 feel. It is a true 911 and not something the factory wants you to think is a 911.

LTan:

I have both, a '72 "S" targa and a '95 993 RS Replica. Frankly, to chose one would be a hard choice. If I had to, I would probably chose my early car !

The 993 is the final refinement of the 911 tub. It does everything better and faster. However, you really cannot use all of the capability except on a track. Unless you want that extra speed all the time, the 993 is not as exciting at the slower speeds. The early car is simply fun just run errands with ! The early car keeps you an "honest" driver.

If you have a good example of an early car, keep in mind that it is harder to find another good one. Good 993's are still around and are still depreciating. If you compare the pricing, the whole NA aircooled line up is kind of mashing all together, price wise...

Think that this is one of those loaded questions- each person will have their own views on the merits of each car, and no one is wrong. At the end of the day only you can decide which is the right one for you.
