ah..some of us are never satisfied. I had my 85 Carrera Targa now 3 years, and it has been absolutely fantastic - no regrets. Lately, been wondering if a 993 might be even more fun! Must be getting old, but even contemplating a Tip.

Any of you folks been down this track and done the research? The 993 here is ~2.5 times the price of my car. Not sure I will get 2.5 times the fun.

On the other hand, I could get a real 73RS for about the same price..... hmmm.

Anyone moved from a 3.2 to to a 993?

Interesting post, I've been contemplating the very same thing. I have an '88 Targa that I love but lately I've been thinking a 993 might be nice. It will be interesting to see where this thread goes.

I have a '76 2.7, thought about changing and guess what? Now have a 993 AND the 2.7. 2.7 is a sportomatic and the 993 is a tip. The 993 is much easier to live with and has all mod cons + plenty of horses. If you do go down the 993 route look out for corrosion around both front and rear screens, creaking from either screen (both recognised problems with the variant).

It depends what you do with the car - the 993 is a great everyday car and tracks really well with mega adjustments available on the suspension. Getting extra power out of some models can be expensive and change the lights for a set of HID - the standard lights are 1 candella!

The '73 RS is pretty basic and noisy for everyday use but will undoubtedly hold its value. Many will have been shunted so check out well - also look out for the ringers - check chassis and engine numbers against a good reference.

I think it comes down to what you want to use the car for.

Interesting choice, have fun, try the lot.

A '73RS for the same price as a 993 sounds like a pretty good deal. There can't be too many of them in Aussie though?

Just went down this road! Bought a 993 two weeks ago and I love it. In the specific case of the two cars I own (until I sell the older car), the 993 is at least 2.5 times better (notice that I didn't say more fun). I'm going from a stock '85 with 130k miles to a '96 with 30k, so you may see where I'm coming from. MUCH more power, ABS brakes, great sounding motor, AC that works very well, no rattles. 2.5 times more fun? No. More like 1.5 times more fun, because the 993 is more civilized at the same time it is better. It's a bit like growing up.

2.5 times the fun of my '86 Carrera would probably kill me.

That being said,I got the bug by test driving a '95 and it's one hell of a car. They're still a little high priced for me, in a few years I look forward to a over coddled , underdriven coupe.

If you had posted this on the 993 board you probably would have received a ton of responses. Some/most 993ers don't stray from their forum. I've owned a pretty good cross section of P cars, and have driven a whole bunch more that belonged to friends. Right now I feel like I've got the best that Porsche has produced. The 993 is addictive!!! I want to drive it all the time, but I also would like to keep it in perfect shape = low miles. I think driving it is the better option! I have the funds to buy a 996 and even a 996TT, but I feel more connected to the car and the road in the 993. Also the whole "last of the air cooled" deal will keep the values higher in the future. There are some really good 993 cars out there and some bargains as well. Do a PPI before you buy and then get ready to do some serious smiling!

I have an 86 Carrera and a 97 993 in the garage. I still love the 86 with all my heart. I love the look, I love waxing the fenders, I love the way it drives.
That being said, I just returned from a DE at Watkins Glen. The 993 is on another planet. Albeit the 993 does have some serious suspension mods and the 86 was stock, but the car was just wonderful to drive. I think it depends on what you use the car for. If it is your daily driver then the 993 is the car. If you are looking for a weekend driver that just gets your blood flowing stay with the older model. If you can get a 73RS (a real one) for the price of a 993.....take it an run..

I personally have not had the opportunity to drive the older pre 993 series porsches but I can tell you this. Last week I traded my Boxster in on an awsome "Cherry" 993. I liked the Boxster but not a single one of my friends could comprehend why I would trade up (or down depending on your perspective)from a new Boxster to a 95 993. Initially it was for the styling of the 993. I have always loved the body lines and the wide body aspects of the 993's. This was by far the best decision I have made as far a my toy's go. The 993 is a different breed. I LOVE this car and would highly recommend one for your inventory. My Boxster was nice but the 993 is nasty!

I have a '83SC cab, a '96 993 (daily driver), a '96 993 TT, Jeep Wrangler, Yukon, Lexus BUT the car I have the most fun in is the 993. The TT is my favorite but I don't drive it as much. The best part of my 993 is the motor sound at 5,000 RPM It makes my day!
The older 911 is fun to look at but just too slow and it doesn't have the same level of excitement. I'm trying to decide whether or not to sell my 993 but when I crank it up...I change my mind.

I've had my 993 just over 2 years and done 45k miles in it during that time. Do I like it? I'd sell a kidney before I'd sell this car! Get one, you won't regret it.

rrem@peerlesssteel.com I often find myself in such a dilema.... whether it will be the old beater 83'SC, the ho hum 993 or the good ole TwinTurbo. Then my girlfriend wakes me up while I am daydreaming behind the wheel by yelling at me to move my !#@$ car out of the garage so she can get something out!!! If you possibly need a driver for any of the p-cars let me know, Michigan is not so bad.

Wow..looks like I am normal after all. If I was in US, I would buy one of each, and keep mine. If anyone interested on prices(US$) down under:

84-89 Carreras - $35-50K
94-96 993s - $70-90K
73 RS Touring - $70-100K (only saw one for sale in past 12months)
New 996 - $140K
New 996TT - $200K
Unfortunately, we earn Aussie pennies.

All Porsches are great, but there is always a better one! Thanks for all the great inputs. Confirms my fears...now I will have to go test drive a 993...!

993's are great cars to drive and look at. Having said that I am selling my 993 because yesterday I took delivery of a '73 Carrera RS. It is a magical car to drive and listen to. Here is my matching numbers Tangerine Touring model with sunroof and about 99,000 original kilometers.

Bare in mind there are several cosmetic originality issuses to resolve like those ugly black mirrors, gold wheels and side script. Hard to believe that someone actually screwed a passenger side mirror on this car. Guess if the 993 doesn't sell then I can have the best of both Porsche air-cooled worlds.
