Default $39.00 tranny jack at Pep-Boys

I couldn't believe it saturday morning when I went in for washer fluid, brake fluid, and some starter fluid. Inside the front door was an aray of discounted tools I didn't need. I got a 1/2" drive ratchet for a buck.(I've broken all but one of my grandfather's Chraftsman) Should I go back and see if one of the two 1/2 ton tranny jacks are still there? I've been thinking it may be nice for dropping the motor 12-18 inches to clean and repaint the tin. What do you think? Can I get the tin out without such a jack. .....or can I just unbolt the tin with the engine as is?

Douglas-------- I got the biggest jack stands Pep Boys had, think they are one ton. With the SC, they hold the car high enough to drop the engine and tranny out without using blocks. The are really stable. I used them beside the wheel under the stub and the the smaller stands under the jack pads at the lift points. With the special foot that goes into the floor jack, I dropped the engine and tranny by my self without difficulty. The larger stands also have a lever adjust that works much better than the hole and pin type.

Doug: Don't those have a lifetime warranty? If so, and if you still have them, take them to Sears for replacement.

Sears only exchanges exact part# and has a habit of changing # every 10 years. My 30 and 40 year old tools have no part #'s. Oh well.

I'd raise he!! with the manager if that's what someone on the sales floor told you. If they offer a lifetime warranty, and then don't stock the identical product any longer, then I think they're obligated to give you a comparable model.

Rant over. Carry on.

Randy, what are you saying? The tools are worth maybe $20.00. I'm going to write Sacramento over $20.00? I was torn over letting the tools go anyway. I only asked at Sears. I didn't really want to let go.

I sure would - but my job is analogous. They take thousands of people for $10 to $20 each. It isn't just you. If they get an inquiry from the consumer protection div. they may stop on their own or the govt. has the authority to order them to honor their warranty.

I'd call it part public service. Consumers get ripped off every day.

I think someone may have miss informed you about the return policy. I have never gotten anything but a no questions asked return and they sometimes even offer to replace it with the closest tool if that one is not available. I think that maybe you just need to go to a different sears.
