Just humor me folks....How many gallons of gas do our cars hold?
EDIT:
22.5 gallons.
What kind of milage do we expect?
I swear I drove 500 miles on one tank. I may be wrong, but we went to Santa Barbarra and Solvange and back on less than a tank.

Michael: That's my dilemma - if my SUV is worth only half its original sell price, 1.5 years and only 10K miles later, what could it possibly be worth at 4 years old. If it's worth $12K it might be worth hanging on to, but if it's worth $6K at that point the gas savings will have made the decision to get rid of it correct (I can still bank $24K at this point). What I'm having problems getting my head around is how can a $50K new vehicle be worth almost nothing four years later? Is it VW, or the world economy, or is everybody so scared of $10K transmission replacements done by somewhat-inept dealer mechanics, or $15K engine swaps because manufacturers won't supply repair parts, or is it that the average consumer is so scared of skyrocketing gas prices they won't do the math and pay $30K for an as-new $50K vehicle that gets crappy mileage. Jeez, even GM and Ford are shutting down truck/SUV plants - is that historic or what?

Pete don't forget potential insurance savings you would have with owning a smaller vehicle. Maintenance is usually less as well (smaller tires cost less....etc) Just more to think about.
As for why the price drop of SUVs ask yourself this; would you go out and buy an Toureg today if it was 35K?

I have always looked at cars as consumables. When you are done paying for them they are worth zero. Anything you get from the dealer on a trade in is just a bonus. I drive the crap out of them and throw them away. I've had a string of Nissan's that were about $300 per month. I put a zillion miles on them and get my money out of them as I go. I just don't get "resale value".

Hey, 500 miles divided by 20 gallons = 25 mpg. Driving conservatively, on the open highway, it's quite possible!

It is, the longer the trips and more on the highway the better. I know when I took that long trip I was getting really good mileage because it was mostly highway (although a lot of hills) and the engine only got cold once. Now that everything is close and I spend more time warming the engine up I see a good drop in mileage.

And, thinking about your Touareg question, I probably would not. That's a tough "zone" to be in; if you've got $35K for a car there are a heckuva lot of choices out there (new cars) besides a 1.5 year old used SUV. Oh well, it is what it is...

My 911 is now averaging 12-14mpg if I drive it lightly. My Ridgeline trounces it there.
I'm happier than heck that I found 100 octane for only $6.49/gallon in Agoura Hills today! With $4.65 91 octane, that means I'm paying about $5.60/gallon on my blend. Better than when I pay $8/gallon for 100
in San Diego.
