Mystery Oil leak at rear of engine
I have a 1973 911T 2.4L MFI. For awhile there was a very small drop or two on the garage floor under the rear of the engine. Of course, there was smoke when I would stop driving. Well, now instead of a drop, I noticed when I pulled it into the garage, that there was actually asolid line of oil flowing down. It was a thin line, but more than ever before. No oil at the front at all. It seems that there is just no room to get behind these engines to find leaks, so, I am open to any thoughts as to where this quantity of oil could be flowing from. I did check the oil return tubes, dry, rocker covers, both top and bottom, dry. The oil seems to be flowing from the drivers side of the engine.
Help.
Thanks,
Scott Harris

Scott,
When you are saying rear/behind, for clarity, are you talking the side of the engine facing the driver or facing the rear bumper?

I can remember changing <mechanic> a long Main-oil line a few years ago on my 1988 911 carrera.
You might look there ? I believe it is on the right rear but i might be wrong.
good luck

I believe MFI cars have a drive off the left rear camshaft. There is a seal behind the toothed pulley that can go bad. Might as well change the belt while you are back there. There is also an oil line, oil bypass valve, barrel, head & valve cover gaskets that could be the culprit. Early car gaskets are no where near as reliable as later ones. Best thing is to clean the engine well, run it in place for awhile, then look for the leak.

I'm going to buy some of the flourescent dye used to find oil leaks and run it. That should show me 100% where the leak is coming from. My biggest problem is getting behind the engine. Some of you mentioned a cam oil feedline. Is this excesable without dropping the engine? Also mention was made of a oil feed line at the back. Does this line connect to the oil cooler then into the engine? There was oil on this line as far up as I could see or reach. Nothing on the oil cooler side, just up into the unreachable areas.
And last area mentioned was a seal behind the MFI toothed pully. How difficult would this be to change? Anyone know where I can find automotive motor oil compatable dye?

Here are a few oil dyes, as well as some testors.

I have heard you can also find these at some NAPA stores, but cant vouch for that.
Good luck with your leak!
