Default Help with head temp sensor sizing ...........UPDATE: road trip

Sorry guys, I'm gonna edit this myself before Randy V. shows up and I vanish. It was just another rant about the head temp sensor.

Douglas: The new 14mm wrench-sized sensor is correct, but so is the old 13mm wrench-sized sensor. Occasionally, when Porsche updates/improves a part they will make a change like this, possibly for identification purposes. When replacement occurs, cut the wire off the old sensor and use a regular 13mm socket to remove. To install the new (2-wire) sensor, use the special deep 14mm socket.

Thanks Pete, you know how I get. I'm a little pissy.

So, can we safely say the old one had been on the car too long. When was the switch to 14mm?

today just wasn't a good day to stir my pot. the D.A. isn't gonna look at victom A's case for six months and will put her on the stand bacause "he has a wright to face his accuser"....

lets just say I got mixed signals on size. I purchased a 13mm extra deep socket and a 3/8" cutting tool to cut out a slot. Then lost it. Then I did it all over again and it wasn't a 13mm I needed to install the new one it was a 14mm. I get under the car to find that the slotted 13mm isn't strong enough to loosen to sensor. back down for a 3rd 13mm super deep. Then it turns out the new sensor is 14MM. So, back down to the super deep socket store for a 14mm. Of course I forgot the cutting tool so its now a 3rd 3/8 milling tool. This one is too thick and rubs on the sheet metal. back down to the store for a thin-wall-super-deep-14mm and back to a friends mill to cut it. I must have purchased $45 in tools and who knows in gas and time....

So, if you need the above listed tool and are also seeking permission to enter into the inner circle (it's a joke people) I would be more than happy to forward the tool.

LOL,

That is a great idea about the stand but I have mine reserved for a buddy of mine to do his CHTS. Maybe after his job but I bet another member may need it.

It would be great to put a face to a name, hope you can make it.

Hey Draco,

I just ordered a CHT sensor from Pelican for my '87 Carrera and it is scheduled to arrive later this week. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me your modified 14MM CHT sensor removal tool. I promise to forward it on to the next Rennlister that needs it. Please send me a PM if you haven't already passed it along. Thanks!

I just hand tightened with needle nosed pliers. Is that bad? If the sensor is bad can't you just cut the wire and use a regular socket?

Pete, relax. they were the good needle nosed. Not everyone has a Mac Tool dist. next door. How many guys have a customer with a machine shop open 24/7 like I do. I could punch out that tool at about $4.00 all day. wasn't it a couple bucks more for the real deal?
