Question Front Bumper Oil Coolers

I currently own an '87 Carrera and am in the process of installing a RSR Style front bumper. The bumper has an opening for an oil cooler and I am contemplating moving the oil cooler there. My questions are;
1. Will the stock one in the fender fit in the bumper?
2. Is it worth it to move or purchase a cooler to put in this location?
The car is going to be used for stock class club racing. I am also a bit concerned about damage happening to the cooler if I move it since it's in a bit more of a dangerous position. Any info or advice if anyone has done this would be appreciated.

James,

In my SC, I found I had to move the oil cooler to the front valance to get adequate cooling under track conditions. If your engine runs less than 250 degrees on the track, you might just leave it where it is. You can always change coolers (don't believe your existing cooler will fit in the narrow valance opening) in the future. Regarding your concern about damage, if a valance-mounted oil cooler is damaged you'll have bigger problems to worry about. I installed a RUF front valance because it's made of polyurethane and has "give" to it - important for dual purpose daily driver and track usage. For dedicated track usage, it would be of less importance.

If you are a do it yourselfer, second generation RX7s have nice oil coolers, and will work really great in a 911 spoiler, go to you nearest Pick and Pull auto yard and pull a cooler off an RX7. I just got two for $10 each.

You can go the RX-7 route, or get an inexpensive cooler from a number of online sources. Then my advice would be to plumb the new front cooler in series with the existing fender-mounted one. Use Aeroquip stainless hose (AN-12) and fittings.

I don't know if you can ever have too much oil cooling capacity.

Your existing cooler will not fit in the valance. Many have done that mod using the 5 1/2 X 2 1/4 X 20 B&B cooler which just barely fits with slight tweeks to the tub. The advantage of the front mount over the wheel well mount is clean airflow. The advantage of the wheel well mount is the fan if traffic is a fact of life. To get the best of both worlds and since you probably only need marginaly more cooling, use a smaller more easily fitted front mount in series with the fender mount. My B&B as described above has been more than adaquate for a 3.6 under all street/track conditions(except a traffic jam, sort of wish I had a fan for that one) temps never exceed 95C.

AN-12 is the minimum size. I used AN-16 hose and fittings when I did my oil plumbing. RUF's hoses looked to be the same as AN-16, as I recall too. Earl's also makes good hose and fittings.

I'd agree that AN-16 (1 inch) is better than AN-12 (3/4 inch) for performance applications. But it seems kind of pricey for a small supplemental cooler.

Gentlemen, Thank you for all the insight!! I will look into getting a B&B front cooler and then plumb inline with the Aeroquip fittings. My car seems to run fairly cool but then I have not had it that long and have not run at a track when the temps were above 70F. This looks like it will be a fun project before Sebring!!

try www.batinc.com they have a very well thought out oil cooler system, with thermo
and fan components.

after i posted about batinc.com i tried to
get some pricing today on a 12an in 12an out
mocal thermostat. the guy that answered the phone didn,t know what mocal was, he said to
wait til monday and call pete.(sounds like
another example of your daughter getting knocked up and having to hire the new son in law). i was pissed because they at least sounded like they knew what they were doing from there web page!
