Post Squeaky heater fan on 88

My heater fan makes some ugly noises when i first crank it up, goes to a squeak then the strange noises fade away after 10 seconds or so. Is the bearing bad or something? How do i get at it to fix it? It works fine after all the initial hoopla, just a little annoying in the beginning.

thanks

Very common problem, they all drop dead / squeal / fall apart (choose one) The typical solution is to backdate the heating system. Problem, though is you lose the ability to defrost as you sit at idle. Once your underway all is well however. If you're driving around now and your car needs to defrost than this may be an issue.

However, if you keep your car indoors during times when you may need defrost than it's nice not having that ugly blower motor covering everything up..

One other option is to take the blower apart and use some heavy grease on the bearing. That's what I did, and mine's been quiet ever since.

I've only had my car since March, so now that I'm beginning to use the heat (for the first time), I get some of these 'minor squeaks' upon startup also. Is taking the blower apart & greasing the bearings a fairly easy task? Steve, having done this, do you have any 'words of wisdom'? Thanks...Keith

It's not really difficult - just remove the screws and it slides apart. I put some really good lithium grease on the main bearing inside and it worked great. The fan is probably not as quiet as it could be, but it's a lot better than the "cat in meat grinder" sound it was making!

I have a squeeky/noisy passenger side blower motor. Can the same repair solution be used to fix it as well. Is it easy to access for repair? It is very annoying (I have to keep the stereo loud to muffle the noise).

Regards,
jet

I don't know about the footwell blowers - I've only ever worked on the blower in the engine compartment. I suppose it would be much the same procedure though, if you could figure out how to get the footwell blower apart (and more importantly back together!).

I guess I mis-interpreted the original post, as my problem seems to be similar to the one JET911 describes (except mine is the blower on the driver's side). I'm going to take a look when I get home...Thanks for the info!

both of my 911s have the same problem [simple solution, don't use the heater blower ]

it sounds like a squirl up in the dash board at first...and then it lets out this nasty squeel that sometimes catches me off gaurd and scares the crap out of me

So where is this confounded heater fan located? (Yes, I'm a newbie).

My heater fan squeaks for a few seconds at startup as well. The noise comes out of the driver's-side windshield vent, so I assume the fan is accessible thru the front trunk.

Question

Yep, got the same problem on my '87 cab. Squeaks on start up and then goes away, sound comes from under dash on passenger side. Any guidance on removal & lubrication from one who has done this job? Jim H.
